Summary

The undefined website content suggests that Medium writers can increase their earnings by publishing recipe articles, which tend to keep readers engaged for longer periods, thus enhancing reading times and potentially earnings through the Medium Partnership Program.

Abstract

The article emphasizes the effectiveness of recipe posts in capturing longer reading times on Medium, which is crucial for writers looking to maximize their earnings through the platform's Partnership Program. It points out that reading times can be significantly extended when readers follow a recipe while cooking, potentially keeping the article open for anywhere from 7 minutes to over an hour. The article also provides a checklist for writing a successful recipe post, including a title, number of servings, images, a list of ingredients, and a detailed step-by-step method. Writers are encouraged to submit their recipes to the "Global Foodies" publication, which is described as a small, engaged community where writers can share their culinary creations from around the world. The article concludes by inviting new writers to try their hand at writing recipes and suggests that even if the recipe doesn't gain traction, it serves as a personal reference for future cooking.

The Best Type of Medium Post for Longer Reading Times

An underutilized type of post on Medium

Anyone in the Medium Partnership Program is aware that our payments are dependent on the reading times of Medium members on our articles. In order to optimize your dollar return for each article you produce, you either need:

  • More eyes reading your article, or
  • More time spent on your article.

The second point is where a certain type of post comes to the fore. And it’s not being done a great deal at the moment.

When you follow a recipe online, how long do you keep that browser window open? Usually, for as long as it takes to cook a meal. This can be anywhere from 7 minutes to over an hour. That’s a lot of time being spent on your article.

Writing one of these posts takes as long as it does to remember what you did in the kitchen right now. So it’s not a huge time investment.

There are a few specific things needed though to write up a recipe that you just created on the stove top. Include all of these, and you’re on your way to crafting an article that someone else can clearly follow step-by-step.

  • Recipe title
  • How many servings it makes
  • At least 1 image, so people know what they’re aiming to recreate
  • List of ingredients
  • Step-by-step method (emphasis on step-by-step: your actions need to be clear for someone else to follow with success)

Once you’ve typed up your recipe, you can either publish it directly or submit it to a cooking-related publication. Disclaimer: I have one of these.

Global Foodies is a publication that allows Medium writers to share their favorite recipes from all over the world. Being a small publication, it’s a community with a great amount of engagement. People have made my recipes from here. I know because they’ve told me, and I got paid for it.

Submission guidelines to Global Foodies is pretty straightforward and we love seeing new writers and their new dishes all the time.

If you’ve never written a recipe before, why not give one a crack? Worst case scenario, you’ve got somewhere to reference when you want to make a certain dish again.
