The Best Things In Life
A Poem About Learning To Recognise The Good
The best things in life grow slowly,
Like the majestic oak, whose branches,
When stretched out to the sun,
Give a cool haven to the world beneath,
And the powerful mountain peaks,
Whose growth has taken countless eons,
Whose subtle changes no one can discern,
And whose lifespans boggle the imagination.
Things which grow up quickly, die just as quickly.
We call plants which shoot up quickly
And soon die, weeds!
We call feelings which come and go quickly,
Fancies, crushes, whims and impulses,
Everyone knows the short-lived love affair.
Events of short duration in great intensity are common place!
But the beauty which endues is a precious gem,
Fashioned over time immeasurable!
Who would rush the artist in his art?
The craftsman in his craft?
Who would cut short the training of the Athlete?
Who needs every moment of discipline
to attain the winning edge!
To expect beauty, without effort, growth without sacrifice,
Love, without discipline, would be the greatest folly!
For the best things in life, the good which endures,
Are built slowly, upon a foundation of patience,
With the mortar of perseverance,
And the bricks of trust in the future!
The best things in life grow slowly!
