The Best Places I’ve Been to: Odd But Amazing Bridge

Some bridges take you across a river, some bridges take you across heaven!

A weird looking bridge! But what can it reveal? Photo — Ilam Padmanabhan

Norway is a country that takes its beauty seriously. If there is an opportunity to enjoy stunning landscapes and views, the Norwegians will take it. For example, the odd but unique bridge that leads straight into heaven (no, not that kind).

Aurlandsfjord is one of Norway’s most picturesque areas. The locals decided that they needed a way to get closer to the views. So, they built a bridge!

“If you are good at building bridges, you will never fall into the abyss!” – Mehmet Murat Ildan.

A bit of the drive to the bridge first! It was a narrow road with tight turns and hairpin bends. The views were absolutely incredible, though — we could see the snow-capped mountains in the distance, as well as the fjord itself. But it felt like we were driving into the fjord with just one wheel.

It was a gorgeous summer day! We’ve had excellent luck with the weather on all of our trips (except for a couple of days in Iceland).

Back to the bridge!

The bridge doesn’t reveal itself until you get really close. Almost as if the Norwegians built it like a bit of secret. It’ll show you the riches only if you seek it!

The bridge doesn’t reveal much until let yourself in completely!

You think you know what to expect when you walk on the bridge, as it overlooks the fjord you saw when you drove up. However, I underestimated how much a slight change in height can change perspectives.

The difference between “almost at the top” and “the top” is enormous!

How about that for a view!

As we stepped onto the platform, the scenery was beautiful. But it’s not extraordinary.

But as you lose the rest of the world and take a few more steps onto the platform the views turn simply stunning! I’ve never seen such breathtaking panoramic views from any fjord before! Not without hiking for 3 hours!!

You see the river snaking its way through the valley below on one side. And on the other, snow-capped mountains are towering above you! It was an unreal sight.

Gorgeous view!

The bridge itself was a sight to behold. It is made of wood and metal and curved to follow the natural shape of the land. It is designed to look like it was going to take you over the cliff and across all the way. I wasn’t clever enough at the time to take a photo from those interesting angles!

Sorry, I was too distracted with the beauty all around me!

This place has arguably the best public toilet ever! Just see at the photo to understand why I say that. I cannot remember another public toilet with a view, let alone something gorgeous like this.

Best public toilet, ever!

“Men build too many walls and not enough bridges.”– Joseph Fort Newton. Imagine what a beautiful world we’ll have if the focus was on the bridges, not the walls!

I would like to tag Agnes Simigh for her post about Iran. It’s not a place I expected to be part of the list, but was surprised! Well written by Agnes! — https://readmedium.com/iran-the-best-place-i-have-been-ad2126254981
