Five ways to achieve confidence in your work life
Self-confidence is often the solution to a successful life. I never thought I had enough; you may feel the same. Now research has uncovered some pathways that, if followed, offer new hope for achieving elevated levels of self-assurance.
Definitions
There are many definitions of confidence. They all boil down to the assurance that you can do stuff. Or the belief that you have the resources to handle a job.
Self-confidence is the expected probability that a person will achieve a goal in a particular situation.
Philip Roth, in Exit Ghost, asserts confidence is the assurance that you are wanted and will gain approval and support.
Others say self-confidence is assurance that one’s qualities and skills are equal to a task.
How Confidence Gets Reduced
If you exaggerate expectations of yourself, your confidence will take a hit. The temptation will arise to use this as an excuse not to try hard.
And confidence is reduced if there is a significant discrepancy between what you feel you should do and what you can do. If you want to run a marathon but have only practiced by walking around the block, your capacity will stay below what is required. Your confidence will be underwhelming.
Indicators of low Self-confidence
Lack of confidence happens in many domains and areas of life: it shows up in anxiety in social situations, low social conformity, and an inability to accept compliments.
Low self-confidence also is indicated by exaggerated concern with what others think of you. And it is demonstrated by a reluctance to take on challenges and an unwillingness to trust your own opinion.
Rewards of High Confidence
Self-confidence is the root of self fulfilling prophesies. A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that comes true partly because of a person or group of persons’ belief or expectation that said prediction would come true.
An example would be if you believe “Marcia will probably like me if I talk with her.” That belief alone can partially cause you to initiate a conversation with Marcia and be friendlier to her.
Thus, the belief alone actually increases the probability that the conversation will happen.
How to Improve Self-Confidence
To doubt is to be human. Even the finest sports stars feel the weight of self-doubt.
To discover true self-confidence, to find someone who has undergone an exorcism (expulsion) of self-doubt, can be a remarkable experience.
I once had a professor at university who exemplified this quality. He was a Harvard graduate, the recipient of numerous scholarly rewards, and a paragon of self-assuredness.
His confidence level was unquestioned. He was a striking example that competence produces confidence.

Arduous work can substitute for talent. It’s whoever shows up the most. If you look back at №1’s training schedule and then at №2’s training schedule over a year, you better believe number one has worked just that little bit harder.
Additional Factors that Increase Self-Confidence
The following are some critical factors that increase self-confidence and performance. For these points, I am indebted to Tom Stevens, Ph.d
Past Success in Similar Situations. The more experience and success you have achieved in similar cases, the more confident you will feel. We will feel less secure if we have a poor record of accomplishment or lack experience.
Exacting Standards for Success. Your standards or expectations may be too high considering factors such as the difficulty of the task, and level of experience, Standards that are too high will undermine our confidence. Find the equilibrium between your standards and your ability.
Sometimes we can set ourselves up for unexpected failure by setting too low goals. Setting goals that are optimally challenging (considering all of these factors) is the most motivating
Positive Philosophy and Positive self-talk. The way we talk to ourselves influences our confidence levels. Your confidence will improve as you confront or replace old negative beliefs with positive ones.
Visualizing Success. Visualizing success implements the positive self-fulfilling prophesy motivation and helps us develop road maps to success. Imagining ourselves performing some task and reaching a successful outcome can help us overcome mental barriers to success.
Others’ Expectations and Input. What others say can also affect our confidence, especially if we are young, inexperienced in the area, or more externally controlled
Do you feel self-confident after talking with a particular person or being in a specific group? A straightforward way to learn to become more confident is to spend more time with people who help you feel better about yourself and less time with those who don’t.
