The Best Part About Trump Losing
Although we are not quite there yet, we are getting close
My grandparents don’t talk much about politics but they’re muttering about Trump, trying to get answers from me. “What kind of a deranged lunatic doesn’t concede after losing a race?” my grandfather asks in Tamil. “What kind of mad man thinks there’s fraud in American elections,” my grandmother ponders.
I don’t have answers for them but I am surprised that he has become someone that they are well aware of and who is discussed in the local papers.
What’s more surprising is how in tune they are with what’s going on with the occupant of the White House. They know the ins and outs of the insanity of this man. They know his deranged behavior, disrespectful demeanor, and racist tendencies. They know of his power-hungry ways and how he is holding the American public at his mercy.
It’s not just my 90-year grandparents who are aware of what’s going on in America but most people I meet here in Asia are intimately familiar with American news. They know about the U.S. elections, what the electoral college is about and which states are blue and red. All because of Trump.
Trump-free living
All I want is a day where I don’t have to hear or think about Trump. For the past 6 years of our lives, we have been held hostage by this man who has manipulated the media and our lives to make his doings and sayings a part of our daily conversation.
Not a day has gone by where one of his policies has affected a group that I care about. Not a day goes by where he has done or said something utterly ridiculous. Not a day goes by where he hasn’t done something unethical or illegal. Not a day goes by when he has done something beneath the dignity of the Presidency.
Even if you want to ignore him, it’s hard to do because he has the media addicted. After years as a reality television star and marketing his real estate “empire”, Trump understands mass media and how to create headlines that keep his audience hooked. He knows that his outlandish statements, racist tropes and demeaning language has a captive audience.
He’s like an accident happening every day, every hour. On top of his actions and his words, he has been gifted Twitter which regularly shares his messages to millions of people. He makes news every single day which the media carries throughout the news cycle. He gives them multiple stories a day to run with, giving each story an unruly amount of air time.
He will no longer control our news cycles
The best part about Trump losing this most recent election is that we will stop hearing about the outlandish things this man says and does. His every quip and statement will no longer be newsworthy. He will be no longer the leader of the free world so nothing he says or does will be relevant.
Sure, he may plot another run for the Presidency and try to continue to capture headlines every day by opposing the Biden administration but I doubt he’ll get the same coverage. I don’t think the media will salivate over his every word and be as willing to publicize his nonsense.
I can’t wait for the day where our days start with normalcy and decency. I can’t wait to talk about thunderstorms and sunshine. I can’t wait for him to be booted out of the White House so we have a rational person in there. And ultimately, I can’t wait to stop hearing about him, talking about him and having to answer questions to people about him.
Trump will be a stain on American history. He’s a reminder that although we have come a long ways from our racist past, racism and bigotry are still very much alive. When he says make America great again, he wants to go back to an era where racism and intolerance were acceptable. He wants to return to a day when you could demean women and make derogatory comments about minorities. He wants to go back to a day when the nation was divided and racially segregated.
Goodbye and good ridance
While his inflammatory statements and derogatory rhetoric will be gone, America will take a long time to heal from this Presidency. While we will no longer have to talk about him and squabble about the ridiculousness of his speech, we will have to atone for his division of the American people and his attempt to undermine American democracy.
The reign of Trump is coming to an end and we will not have to speak of him much. We will no longer have to hear about him or from him. We will no longer have to have our daily news cycle revolve around his divisive words.
The best part about Trump losing the Presidency is not having to talk about him.
Tired of hearing about Trump for the past several years? Ready to turn off the news for a bit and enjoy talking about just about anything else?
