The best journaling/diary app for Mac & iOS in 2022

I started getting interested in the concept of journalling just a couple of weeks ago and this is because I saw how people could be able to write down all this information on a daily basis of how they felt, things they experienced, what they did, places they visited, who they were with and so forth.

Some of the very well-known famous icons that once lived used to keep journals, people such as Marco Polo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Charles Darwin as well as Winston Churchill. This indicates that journaling was a concept that was adopted ever since back in the day.

What is a personal Journal?

A personal journal is a record of your observations, emotions, feelings and reflections of various experiences that you have been through.

Journaling is said to have advantages such as

  1. Strengthening one's self-discipline
  2. Improving communication skills
  3. Boosting self-confidence as well as
  4. Sparking creativity.

Personally, I liked the whole concept of having my personal journal so I decided to set out and look for an application that would enable me to log certain aspects of my daily life.

One of the very first applications I came across was known as Day One. I’m mentioning this application before my big reveal as it’s the best out there and it is packed with features. But I believe just as it wasn’t for me due to factors that I will point out it may not be so for someone else too. But in general, most people do love the app.

Day One

Day One is the most utilized journalling app in the app store and this is because of the features it packs. This app is available for free on Mac and iOS with limited features. If anyone would be interested in trying the premium features there is a 7-day free trial that helps anyone decide whether they would like to commit to the app or not. The premium features are all listed in the image below imported directly from their website.

Let’s say you loved the app. You would have to pay a yearly subscription of $34.99 USD/year which to me seems a lot compared to the app that I am currently using.

Some people would consider the number of features this app packs and they would end up accepting the price tag but I just don’t seem to be okay with it. I have no idea why they didn’t add a monthly option but that’s all one can get.

Why I don't like Day One

  1. The layout and design: The app looks quite old and junky and this is the major reason why I didn’t opt to go for Day One. I am very driven by apps that look super modern and very functional at the same time but finding such apps seems to be a huge problem as most will have one but not the other.
  2. High pricing: Honestly I would be ready to commit to the $34.99USD/year price tag if I thought the app was really that good but to me, the value it was offering didn't quite catch me.

But I guess this is the part where I introduce the absolutely amazing app that I'm in love with after talking a lot about the huge competitor with the ugly design (haha).

Drum rolls please……

Well, the app is known as Everlog, It is a fairly new app created by an Indie developer, and believe me, it looks absolutely amazing and it is very promising.

Image from everlog App Store description

The app is available on iOS and Mac for free with limited features but for just £1.79 ($2.40) per month or £17.49 ($23.45) per year, you can get all the premium features that come with the app. Now here is the best part, do you want to own it for good and never pay these monthly or annual fees? Well, you can get hold of it for only £35.99 ($48.25).

Downsides of Everlog:

There are very few downsides of the app that might matter to a lot of people. But speaking as a premium user of the app for almost 2 weeks I can say that I absolutely enjoy it and that there are very few tweaks and additions that could be done to make the app top tier. The following would be the downsides of the app in comparison to its great competitor

  1. Doesn't have gallery view: Day one has an option on the app where you could be able to view all your entries by images uploaded. This is something that everlog doesn't have yet but according to responses from the developer himself, it is something that is already in plan.
  2. No video or audio entries: Everlog being fairly new doesn’t have the option to add entries in form of videos or audio but its competitor Day one can do so and I could personally suggest that this is because they have been in the industry since 2011 so they were able to incorporate all these features with time.
  3. Option to look back by date (Searching entries by date): I was shocked to find out that the app does not have a feature whereby I would be able to search for my entries based on the day that I created them. This is one of the major things I didn’t like about the app but upon asking the developer about it he said that most of the mentioned problems have been identified by other users as well and are in plan.

Overall, Everlog is my favourite app majorly because of its absolutely beautiful design and affordability
