The Benefits of Living Abroad

My Thoughts

As a student, the opportunity to live abroad was incredibly appealing to me. The chance to experience new cultures, learn a new language, and gain independence seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And when I finally made the decision to study abroad, I was so excited and nervous.

The Freedom and Independence of Living Abroad

As soon as I arrived in France, my new home, I was struck by the freedom of living abroad. I wasn’t tied down by the familiar routines and expectations in Canada. I was able to explore new neighbourhoods, try new foods, and make my own schedule without any outside constraint, other than school of course.

But the freedom and independence of living abroad weren’t just limited to my daily routine. I also found that I had a new sense of control over my own destiny. As a student, I had always relied on my parents and friends for support. But when I was living abroad, I was responsible for taking care of myself and making my own decisions. Being in control of my own life is a thrilling feeling, and it helped me grow as a person in ways that I could never have imagined.

The Upside of Learning About New Cultures and Ways of Life

One of the most significant benefits of living abroad for me was the opportunity to learn about new cultures and ways of life. When you are living in a foreign country, you are exposed to a whole new set of customs and traditions that may be very different from those of your home country. This can be an enriching experience, as you learn about the history, values, and beliefs of the people in your new home.

For me, learning about the culture in France was a truly transformative experience, even though it was also a bit frustrating at times. I was able to experience new customs, traditions, and ways of life that I had never encountered before. And as I travelled and explored France and the surrounding countries, I was also able to learn about their cultures. This broadened my understanding of the world and helped me see things from a new perspective.

The Opportunity to Learn a New Language

Another significant benefit of living abroad was the opportunity to learn a new language. Whether you are studying abroad in a country where you already speak the language or are learning a new language from scratch, the experience of learning a new language can be incredibly rewarding. Not only did learning a new language open up new job opportunities, like working in translation, and allow me to communicate with a wider range of people, but it was also a fun and challenging experience that helped me grow as a person.

Final Thoughts

Living abroad was an incredible experience for me. From the sense of freedom and independence that came with living in a new country to the opportunity to learn about new cultures and languages, there were countless upsides to this experience. While there were certainly moments of homesickness and nostalgia, the memories and personal growth that came with living abroad were worth it. If you have the chance to move abroad, I highly recommend taking it.
