The Benefits Of Having Your Contact Information On Your Bio

We are in the era of content and online marketing. Technological advancements have granted millions in the world avenues to express themselves and to showcase their creativity in various ways that also generate income for them. Millions also have avenues that allow them to market and sell their products online. From blog posts, social media influencing, YouTube, etc, we have access to lots of content from independent individuals.

To achieve success in their endeavors, content creators and marketers create a unique profile and brand that their followers can recognise and identify with. Many content creation avenues such as blogs and even social media also provide a section where the content creator can inform the audience of who they are in form of a bio. In this section, they may also provide a way for them to be contacted for further information, for possible endorsements, and other business activities.

Unfortunately, not many content creators provide additional contact details such as an email in their bio. There have been several times that I have wanted to privately contact particular content creators and I couldn’t find a way to do so. And I know that I am not the only one that has experienced this. This is because other than the already provided means such as the response sections of their content or direct messages, the creators provided no other method of them being contacted.

As the comment sections or direct messages may be full of responses or spam even, could be ignored by most content creators due to the huge volume of messages or a particular message could be lost in these huge volumes, sending messages in those spaces may prove inefficient for both the sender and receiver.

As a content creator, it is important to have your contact info on your bio for several reasons below.

You can be contacted by potential clients

I have experienced this benefit first hand. After writing an article on sex toys published here on Medium, I was contacted by a sex toy company to write a review of their sex toys in exchange for a few samples.

The company was able to contact me through the email address I had provided in my bio.

You can be contacted by audiences who would want to learn more

In case the message on your content is not clear enough and could need further elaboration, your audience could contact you through your private email to learn more about that particular content.

Providing an easily accessible way for them to contact you could help facilitate this.

It could help you connect with your audience

Having a way audiences can reach out to you could help in tightening your bond with them. Such open communication where they reach out to you and you correspond with them on a one-on-one basis could help you connect with your audience at a personal level. This could also help in building trust between you and them.

You can be contacted by audiences with helpful suggestions

Again, I experienced this benefit first hand. After almost a year of publishing almost 300 stories on Medium, I had been receiving minimal financial success on the platform.

Even though I had been receiving positive feedback from most of my readers some of whom were great writers that I admired on the platform, I was still feeling that my progress on the platform was unsatisfactory. I had on various stories about success on the platform commented about my poor success on Medium and had received some suggestions that weren’t very helpful.

After a while of feeling dissatisfied with my Medium journey, I felt frustrated and decided to take a break from publishing on the platform. After almost two months of being away, I received an email from a fellow writer who had read one of my comments about my lack of success on Medium. He had gone through my profile and had figured out what the problem was. He shared it with me through the email address I had provided on my profile and alas! his observations were true. After thanking him, I quickly went and started fixing the mistake he had pointed out to me.

His contacting me about my mistakes was one motivation that helped me get back to publishing on Medium.

Providing an email address on my profile proved helpful in this case as the fellow writer was able to contact me through it at a point when I was inactive on Medium.

You can be contacted by service providers

Business people are always looking for avenues to expand their enterprises. Having an openly available and easily accessible way of being contacted could prove helpful to you in that service providers could contact you offering new ways to expand and even improve your enterprise.

Offers to improve your payment methods, improve your website or design, they could offer you tools to help you expand, etc all of which could help in keeping you updated on the latest trends, technologies, and innovations. You may even receive offers and discounts that could prove helpful to your enterprise.

It shows you are available for business

Other than being contacted by service providers or by potential clients, the very act of having your email address on your bio shows that you are open and available for business. Your bio in this case acts as your business card and can be used by anyone that would be interested in transacting with you.

You can be contacted even after you lose your profile

Many internet users tend to bookmark, pin, save or screenshot information that is beneficial to them for possible retrieval or use at a later date.

It is said that you advertise not so that you can make a sale right away, but so that the customer can find you when they are ready to purchase your products. The period between advertising and making a sale can be days, weeks, or months even.

Placing your private email address on your bio can help you content with an audience in the future for purposes that may be beneficial to you even when you are inactive, have lost your profile, or shifted platforms or avenues.

For many content creators or online marketers, an email address on a bio can be a valuable and consistent way for audiences to communicate with them.

Cons:

Spam

As useful as technology is, it is also subject to abuse by bad actors. There are technological tools available that allow users to filter out email addresses provided in public places. As useful as such tools are, they can be abused by bad actors who use your email address to spam you with unsolicited content. Spam can be annoying and filtering through it to find important communication can be time-wasting.

Scammers

Worse than spammers, having your email address in public spaces can make you prone to scammers. Scammers may spam you with messages offering fake lucrative perks and opportunities to defraud you. They are annoying and engaging with them will waste your time and can even cost you money.

Other internet security issues

Providing your email address in public forums could leave you prone to other internet security attacks such as account hacks, giving bad actors avenues to impersonate you and spam or scam others in your name.

Even though providing an email address in a bio could prove helpful to content creators, understanding and weighing the benefits and risks of doing this is vital. Caution and tact are also necessary, especially when dealing with the negative outcomes of doing so such as spam or scammers.
