The Beauty of The Mundane: Finding Joy in Everyday Life
We usually talk about our bigger experiences when someone asks us, “How was your weekend.”
We tend to respond about where we went and what we did. There’s nothing wrong with that; it just doesn’t tell the whole story.
In actuality, you probably enjoyed lots of little things over the weekend or the past few days that you never gave much thought to, some of which may have actually provided you with more pleasant feelings than the bigger adventures.
For example, here are just a few of the little things I’ve experienced in the past few days that have given me feelings of enjoyment though they may be considered mundane, simple, or boring:
Having a new bar of soap in the shower
Using a shopping cart with wheels that didn’t squeak
Someone holding the door open for me
A person I spoke with looked me in the eyes when talking
Soft piano music playing in the background while I read
The sound and smell of popcorn popping
Putting on a pair of new socks
The aroma of my favorite pie coming out of the kitchen oven
The sound of a champagne cork popping
These are just a few I could think of. How about you? What are the ordinary experiences, sights, smells, or touches that you enjoy?
As the saying goes, “Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.” There’s a lot of truth and wisdom in those few words.
