The Beauty of the Blue Hole in Belize

Take in the world’s largest marine sinkhole from above

The Blue Hole I remember back when we were planning our trip to Belize, Joe asked me, “So… what’s in Belize?” I had one answer: “The Blue Hole!” The Blue Hole is exactly how it sounds: a giant, deep, blue marine sinkhole surrounded by a coral reef. It is the largest natural formation of its kind in the world. It looked unreal, too good to be true. We swooned over Google images, and it sealed the deal: yes, we simply had to add Belize to our Central America itinerary.

I remember when I was a kid; there was this advert on TV. I can’t remember what it was for: a camera or glasses, maybe, but I remember the image of eyes blinking and of hundreds of moments, people and places flickering past at great speed. It said just how many individual images your eyes capture over a lifetime and told you to make them count.

That struck a chord with me. I thought about the images I had captured in my life so far and how sad it was that so many of them were just the same image over and over. Our living room, the TV, and my hometown. What a waste, I thought.

From that moment on, I promised myself that I would strive to see as many new images as possible, to live a life worth capturing, worth photographing.

This memory rushed back to me, sat in that plane gazing out of the window. Each moment, each image unique, beautiful, and magical.

My eyes flickered across the reef as we flew further out into the ocean. Art often imitates life, but here it was as if life was imitating art. The colours, patterns, and texture of the Lighthouse Reef below felt as if they belonged in an abstract painting rather than real life.

I felt an overwhelming feeling of sheer gratitude for having the opportunity to live in this moment and to be in this place. It’s a privilege to travel, and it’s something that I never want to take for granted.

Times like these are precious. When life slows down, and you exist only in this precise bubble, this snapshot in time.

The deep fountain pen ink blue of the Blue Hole, surrounded by swirling turquoise, and all the swathes and swatches of the full spectrum of blue merged with the tears forming in my eyes and an overwhelming surge of emotion.

This is it.

What I’ve always dreamed of.

A life worth capturing.
