The Beautiful Ones are not Yet Born

A lesson in patience and discipline

There are some people who must have the latest of everything — the latest gadgets, clothes, cars and all whatnot. For some, the only reason they don’t have the latest of everything is that they don’t have the money to get them yet — and they can't wait so they ‘hustle’ every day to have that dream actualized. Then there are those who are like me. But we’ll talk about me later.

Do you think you have seen the prettiest things man has ever made? I’m not talking about the ocean or the mountains — those sites will be there year after year and we can afford to go see them someday. I’m talking about the gadgets and shoes. What is it that makes us feel we must HAVE IT NOW or else our happiness won’t be full? A friend of mine said that the person who buys iPhone 12 will be charging it for first use when the 13 is released. We laughed but that’s a punchline.

There will always be something better, bigger, sleeker, and more functional and that is we should reduce the pressure we put on ourselves to get these things. We are to discipline ourselves in order to see these things for what they are. They are tools and not necessities.

My current laptop does the job of getting my designs out and getting my articles to medium. I think if I were to get the latest HP, it would definitely cut my ‘delivery time’ by at least 35% and that’ll aid productivity since this one has gotten slow. It would be nice if I could get a 2021 model but I understand that in four years max, that one too will be ‘old’ and there will be a smarter, faster, prettier one out there.

Patience and Discipline

When people exhibit impatience when it comes to buying a utility, it usually means one of two things.

  1. Fluoride has impaired their ability to think straight.
  2. They are trying to satisfy their ego.

— or Both … Most times it’s both.

To beat this impulsive…impulsive…attitude (I guess), one has to be disciplined because if you chose to go for the latest stuff, you will never rest. You can’t help but be caught up in the illusion of achievement because each new buy reinforces that…that thing which I don’t even have a name for but the people who indulge in such call it “success”. They feel successful when they have acquired the newest one and start to feel like a failure when the next one comes out and they can’t buy it yet. So they grind and talk themselves up because there is no peace until they are successful — in patronizing another person’s business. Wow!

patience and discipline come when a person realizes that the beautiful ones are not yet born. No matter how functional you think that device is, a new one will do more in a short while. So if you must get it, let it be something that adds real value (and not just dopamine) to your life.

Conclusion

The title of this article was inspired by a revelation she had, which was based on a book we both read in secondary school. While we were reading the book, we thought the beautiful ones we're referring to people. However, we find that the author, like most authors, was a genius and that the meaning of his message cut to vanity and shallow living.

It feels nice to have cool stuff and the latest stuff. But life makes it such that we can’t always have them when we want. But if we do our part right, we will always get what we need for our fullest development.

So calm down — relax the pressure. The beautiful ones are not yet born.
