The Basics of Transformative Psychospiritual Techniques
The Awareness-State-Reprogram pattern
“There are differences in all of these techniques. But there are also general patterns that keep repeating. These generalized patterns are worth studying and writing about.” — Personal Log
For many years, I have studied different techniques for making changes in your mind. Call it spirituality. Call it meditation. Call it breathwork. It has many names.
I like to combine all these things into one great category. I call it psychospiritual technology.
Or simpler: Techniques or practices for making changes in your own or someone else's mind.
The Common Factors in Different Techniques
The breathwork of Vim Hof. The breathwork and meditations of Joe Dispenza. The hypnotherapy of Paul McKenna. The 6-phase meditation of Vishen Lakhiani. Cognitive behavioral therapy. Silva Method. Psychedelics-assisted therapy.
Those are a few of the different psychospiritual transformation modalities I have studied.
Over the years I have identified a pattern in what needs to be done to reprogram the mind. I now name this pattern Awareness-State-Reprogram.
Awareness
The first step in changing our thoughts or beliefs is reaching a state of awareness.
Without awareness, it is very difficult to fix the problem. This is one reason why personality disorders are notoriously difficult to treat. Often the person involved doesn’t even think that the problem is a problem!
Ideally, we should know as much as possible about the problem we are trying to fix. We should be clear about three things:
- What. The nature of the problem. What is it exactly? Anxiety? Depression? Unable to concentrate? Any of a myriad of other problems?
- How. The situations where the problem occurs. How is it caused? How does it trigger?
- Why. Where did the problem come from in the first place? Are there physical factors? Is there psychological trauma involved?
In the state of trying to get awareness, great help can be found in a professional counselor or therapist.
These professionals can create a safe environment. Then the issue can be brought to light and explored. The successful outcome is that we get to a state of full understanding of the problem we are trying to fix.
Here we also lay a foundation by defining the solution. How would we like to have it instead?
State
Now — as most of us probably know — awareness alone is not curative.
Unfortunately being able to philosophize about the problem does not solve it. We have done great work, and are well underway, but it is only the beginning.
The next stage of the three-stage rocket to fix problems is getting into a state where the problem can be solved.
This is because it is very difficult to make changes to the mind in the normal waking and alert state. To be able to make a rewrite of the mind we need to put the mind in a state where it can be written to.
It is the reason why so many of the therapy modalities I mentioned before involve some form of state change.
Usually, this involves getting the mind into some kind of trance-like state. Or in a neurophysiological way of speaking: We need to change the brain waves. More specifically we have to get away from Beta (normal waking consciousness) and into Alpha, Theta, or even Delta and the mysterious Gamma.
This is where the techniques come into play. It is why there is very often a lot of talk about Alpha and Theta and the like in hypnosis and guided meditations.
Reprogram
When the mind is now in a receptive state reprogramming can take place.
This is usually done as visualization exercises.
We try to as much as possible pre-train the mind to how it should respond instead of what we did before. In as much detail as possible, we bring up the situations and behaviors. Then we visualize the better alternative we have pre-planned in the awareness stage.
It is important to get into as much detail as possible here. The mind cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality. That is the theory behind it. We are trying to train the mind into believing the new fantasy more than the old reality.
If this is accomplished the mind will now shift. And it will start treating the new imagined reality as the actual reality.
This can take a few or many sessions. Especially it is so if the problem is very difficult or deeply rooted.
Conclusion
The process of reprogramming our minds for happier and more productive lives is highly structured.
We can without a doubt call this both science and technology.
Psychospiritual technology is important for the future of humankind. We must redouble our efforts here because this is the key to both happiness and productivity.
We have only scratched the surface here yet. This is still not a major topic in school. But it should be. Shouldn’t it?
