The Ballad Of Thomas Treason

Photo by Karl Fredrickson on Unsplash

Oh there he sat on a moon shine; no wine no chase just looking for a good time no matter the place through October to June

No one, not even I could tell Thomas what to do he’d look at you and say ‘Ima have it my way’

And that he did — father of some kids and even had a few wives all up top that moon that shines bright

Thomas admired the light not a fan of fright or Halloween Thomas — oh — he could be pretty mean, such as shouting profanities at local teens

He hoped to join the scene of rustlers and rangers the decision-makers upon a-sun, no consequences always fun in business suits secretaries think they’re a hoot

But not - I never liked those guys never will unless they oblige to write me into their will

Sorry — this is about Thomas not me, he frowns upon songs as “they sing it all wrong”

which brings me to why you’re here, with your ears I am sure you did hear

how Thomas committed treason in our dear ol’ town that’s right he did, in front of all of our spouses and kids

He said and I quote —

“Hey Mayor! I want in! I always win, no matter the game! Look at my crown, call me king! Declare me new major before I shout about your history of tax fraud when people walk by me they sigh ‘oh lord’”

The mayor said no you have to go cops were called and Thomas was hauled off to a dirty jail cell

Us here in town wish Thomas well but, if I am being honest hope he learns to spell hell because that is what he caused our deal ol’ town

In a few days, Thomas will be going away to a nearby court where his lawyer will retort all the things he said in hopes of minimizing his jail time

I hope to see you there dress shirt and all you can be and do anything you’d like without invoking treason and causing a fuss

Thanks for listening I’ll be here tomorrow same time same place

Love, your Uncle Russ.

This is my most ambitious writing since I graduated from college. This poem was inspired by all characters in television, film, and stage who break out into song to give the protagonist further exposition. What a wonderful way to move the plot forward.
