Summary

"The Babbling Brook" is a poem that metaphorically describes the persistent and overwhelming emotional turmoil within the speaker.

Abstract

The poem "The Babbling Brook" uses the imagery of a brook to convey the relentless nature of the speaker's internal emotional struggle. The speaker feels a heavy weight inside, a constant pummeling in their chest, and a mind that cannot find peace. The poem reflects on the cyclical nature of these emotions, which ebb and flow but never cease, likening them to a brook that babbles on incessantly. Despite attempts to hide away these feelings to maintain a sense of pride, the speaker acknowledges that this emotional current is an intrinsic part of their being, something they carry within them and must learn to live with.

Opinions

  • The speaker expresses a sense of being overwhelmed by their emotions, which are described as heavy and inescapable.
  • There is a struggle to maintain composure and pride in the face of these emotional tides.
  • The poem suggests that the speaker's emotional state is a permanent fixture in their life, something they have experienced before and expect to continue experiencing.
  • The use of the brook as a metaphor indicates a natural, yet uncontrollable and possibly exhausting, aspect of the speaker's inner world.
  • The speaker seems to be in a state of introspection, recognizing the futility of trying to escape their emotions, and perhaps coming to terms with their persistent nature.

It weighs heavy It weighs heavy inside I can’t escape I can’t hide The pummelling in my chest My mind won’t have a simple rest I can’t escape it It is mine

I look back and remember This feeling over and again It ebbs and flows It never goes The babbling brook Of my body

It weighs heavy It weighs heavy inside I hide it away To mask my pride The pounding in my core I can’t see myself anymore Could I escape it? If I try

I look forward and see The feeling ever before me It ebbs and it flows It will never go For it is the babbling brook Of my body
