The Art of Versatile Writing
Embracing Diversity in Style
I’m happy to say that my audience is not only growing within Medium’s platform but also beyond it. By that, I mean that not only the ‘Medium veterans’ are reading my articles, but also people in my circle are sharing them with others in their circle.
Recently, I received an interesting remark from an acquaintance that it was ‘strange’ how I write one article in a certain way and another differently. This made me think about both myself and the perspective of that person because in this case, I got the impression that it’s expected to write in only one way.
The Freedom to Vary My Writing Style
I find it quite logical to write in various ways. What do I mean by various?
- Sometimes I use subheadings and sometimes I don’t.
- Sometimes I write longer paragraphs than at other times.
- Sometimes my writing style or tone of voice is more conversational than at other times.
- Sometimes my articles are short, sometimes they are not.
Isn’t this diversity what makes it fun?
At least for me as an author, it does.
Escaping the ‘Confines’ of Predetermined Writing
On platforms like Textbroker.com, the way I had to write was always determined. For those who aren’t familiar with Textbroker: this platform is a kind of marketplace for texts, where anyone who wants a text for whatever reason can place a request, so an author can write that text for a fee.
Of course, the intention is that you write exactly as the customer requires. If you don’t do this, you run the risk of having to revise the text. That costs extra time that you could have spent better. If it is still not good enough after the revision, the customer can reject the text. No satisfied customer, no earnings, nada.
This can certainly be seen as a nice side income, but I am glad that I found a platform like Medium — a platform where I can let my writing flow freely and be compensated. I embrace that freedom, and therefore, it may indeed happen that I don’t always write in the same way.
In fact, I love to vary.
Ebbs and Flows of My (Literary) Voice
When I don’t look at writing but at how we go through life in general, I also don’t talk the same way every day. It just depends on my mood. One day I might be brief but powerful, another day completely philosophical. One day I feel more formal, another more informal. Sometimes I’m crazy, sometimes dead serious. No day is the same.
It also depends on the topic. Some topics I prefer to approach more lightly, others not. I’ve had a phase where my language often contained swear words, and now I’m in a phase where I want my articles to be more accessible to a wider audience. Besides that, I am challenging myself to avoid swearing. And yes, that can change anytime. It’s all part of the unpredictability of humans.
At least, it’s part of me.
I believe fluctuations keep writing creatively for both myself and my readers. My goal is not to adhere to presets but to embrace my changing moods, topics, and audiences. I encourage you as the reader to welcome unpredictability too — in writing and life. Expect my tone to continue shifting. Some variance makes communication more authentic. More human.
So I hope you’ll stay open as my voice ebbs and flows because conformity would only dull my words. The freedom to be inconsistent keeps me passionate —and I trust that passion, not uniformity, truly resonates.
