The Art of Giving

A radiating energy or a win-win situation?

There are moments in our life where we find ourselves linking unpleasant emotions to a previous act of Giving or Loving. How many times have we heard this saying: “I gave from all my heart, and look what I get!”? Or “After all that I did, I never expected this in return”? How many times have we said these words ourselves? How many times have we linked our current feeling of frustration from not receiving the kindness we expected to our prior act of Giving itself? Many of us ended up seeing the world as an unkind environment and have made the decision to face it with the same unkindness in order to survive. At an individual or a collective level, violent behaviors may then arise, and our minds may even justify them very easily.

With these thoughts, we start withdrawing from our own Essence. “We give, and all that we get is pain”, then we stop allowing ourselves to give in order to prevent the suffering from happening again, as we have previously linked this unpleasant emotion to the act of Giving.

Let’s go beyond these thoughts. Let’s stop ruminating around them for a little while and go deeper. Frustration from not receiving kindness is a natural human feeling that we all had to deal with at some point in our lives. The question to ask here is: Why do we feel frustrated? Where is the problem exactly? Is it in the Giving or the Expecting? What’s wrong with the act of Giving, even if it was not seen or heard or acknowledged or returned? I would rather ask myself here: when an act of giving needs to be returned, is it really an act of Giving?

When a flower spreads its fragrance, does it think about any return gift? Does it even care whether passengers will notice its fragrance or not? It doesn’t really matter, because the fragrance is the Essence of the flower, and the act of spreading is actually just a radiation of its own Being. There is no subject here. There is no object here. The act of Giving or Spreading or Radiating is alive without the ego of the I and without a specific target. It is up to each soul passing by to be present enough to catch this fragrance, recognize it as it is, and feel embraced with Love. A Thank You word in return could be a beautiful way to express gratitude to the Universe, but won’t change much as the flower is happy to give, it is its own Essence.

If we go back in time and re-awaken the part of us that was Giving, or if we dive for a moment in the part that is still Giving right now, does it care about what’s happening next? If yes, then we have to change the label of the act itself from “Giving” to maybe “hoping for a win-win situation” or “managing a company” - It is a successful act in the world of business, but yet it is not Giving. If that part is blossoming without caring about what will happen next, then we have to realize that the frustration did arise from another need inside us, which is actually not related at all to the act of Giving.

I used to say: I want to love and be loved. Now I say: I live to love, I am happy to give, that’s my Essence. And I don’t feel anymore the need to continue this sentence. While I accept the frustration that visits me frequently and while I am learning to listen to this voice and acknowledge its presence, I also cherish the art of Giving as it is without any subject, without any object, without any hidden past, and without any expected future.
