The Art of Force-Free Motivation — How to Get What You Want Without Heroic Acts of Will Power or Self-Discipline

The simple way to close the gap between what you want and what you’re willing to do to get it.

Most people feel a troublesome gap between their life’s current design and their visions for it. They attempt to close this gap by setting goals and using their willpower to pursue them long-term.

The issue is that willpower is a dirty, low-grade form of fuel that isn’t easily accessible at every moment. Running on willpower, you experience major peaks and valleys in your motivation levels.

As a result, you struggle to finish projects you start. Or you robotically work to achieve goals that no longer excite you.

In traditional manifestation circles, the recommendation is to access a burning desire to make something happen, rather than willpower. A desire is a reality-transforming force when it’s pursued with intensity, abandon, and commitment.

But it’s not rare for people to go entire lifetimes without harnessing the full power of their desires. Many people struggle through multiple layers of superficial wanting before they tap into a desire vivid enough to lead to long-term motivation and the fulfillment of their creative urges.

Recently, I’ve felt shocked by changes in my experience of motivation. These changes have come from simply changing how I work with my desires.

Activities that once felt tedious and dreadful have become fun. These transformations show how radically different a single process can look depending on the way you orient yourself toward it.

If you want to know how to work desire so you continually tap into vivid forms of motivation, read on. This approach will help you stay committed to creating what you want, despite the usual everyday fluctuations in motivation that most people face as they pursue long-term goals.

How conventional manifestation locks you into psychological grooves

At the heart of manifestation psychology is the idea of tapping into “the feeling of the wish fulfilled,” or the psychological space you’d be in if what you wanted came into being.

This perspective flows through the manifestation literature. It’s explained especially well in Neville Goddard’s The Power of Awareness. He urges readers to think from their desired reality, rather than of it.

This technique works because it jolts you momentarily into a new version of your life. The sudden shift can be powerful, yet for many, this transformation is only momentary.

You briefly step into your wish fulfilled. But as you go about your day, your current reality forcefully re-asserts itself. It isn’t long until you feel disconnected from whatever you’d like to create.

This dynamic is particularly common when you create goals based on external arrangements of circumstances. For instance, you might intend to find the perfect job, ideal relationship, or something similar.

But when you focus on these outer world conditions, you orient yourself toward your desire in a restricted way. You cut your contact with psychological resources available to you in the present that could meet the same needs as your grand yet externalized goal.

For every desire, there are underlying emotional needs that can be satisfied in thousands of ways. Many of these are available to you right now and before your outer world rearranges itself. These are the desires-behind-your- desires.

For example, if you’re looking for a perfect job, one desire lying behind that desire may be to feel secure while working toward something meaningful.

When you bring awareness to the desires-behind-your-desires, you become aware of numerous, more immediate ways to get what you want.

In the example above, the person searching for a perfect job can quench their thirst for fulfilling, purpose-driven work today by noticing that just deeply focusing on whatever task is in front of them feels good in itself, apart from any reward.

This is just one example. The point is this: if you find everyday ways to satisfy the underlying needs behind your grander desires, then you can stack these tiny forms of fulfillment on top of each other.

Over time, you can get what you want without friction or force simply by riding the motivational waves that come from noticing tiny ways of meeting the emotional needs driving your ultimate life aspirations.

Combine controlled imagination with the desire-behind-the-desire for irrepressible motivation

Once you’re aware of your subtler desires, you‘ll see numerous magic carpets you can ride toward your ultimate destination.

But some days, you’ll feel tired, apathetic, or otherwise only dimly motivated. In this those moments, you might be aware of your subtler desires but feel lacking in the emotional juice you need to move forward.

Bringing together the desires-behind-your-desires, along with the power of controlled imagination (as Neville and other writers put it) can close your motivational gap and allow you to do whatever you know you need to from a place of ease.

The use of imagination is another fundamental in traditional manifestation work. But since the directive to use your imagination can sound vague, people forget that there are thousands of ways to work with it. Many are not difficult or complex: they just require a willingness to experiment.

A common mistake is assuming you should only use your imagination to envision exactly what you want out of your life. Until you’re clear on that vision, you assume your imagination isn’t worth tapping into.

But you can also see imagination as an alternative to willpower. When you’re aware of what you want to create (and the desires-behind-those-desires), your imagination serves as the final puzzle piece that brings you into the state of mind necessary for working consistently toward a given end.

For example, say you want to write a book. Guided by traditional manifestation thinking, your first inclination might be to imagine yourself with the published book in your hands, signing autographs for enthusiastic fans.

In some moments, this vision can feel motivating. But when you’re stressed or disenchanted with your current circumstances, this future can feel hard to access and imagining it might not move you.

Instead, use your imagination in the present moment to envision an emotional state that helps you work on the book today with the highest levels of passion, flow, and patience.

Before writing, you might close your eyes and reflect on what it would be like if you were completely present and light-hearted during your work session. Just suppose you could approach lapses in concentration or stuck points with patience and curiosity.

If you use imagination to create states of mind that make today’s work enjoyable, the combined force of your daily enjoyment will materialize your larger vision over the longer term.

When you feel cranky or tired or disenchanted with your work, focus less on what you ultimately want. Instead, use your imagination to tap into how you’d like to feel in the present.

Grander visions can pull you forward. But it’s these almost mundane imaginal acts that combine and allow you to build a new reality over time.

It’s simple, yes. But it’s a way of directing your emotional experience from a light-hearted and open-minded perspective. Motivation is easiest to access when it’s anchored in your current reality.

The mental alchemy behind every life transformation

The above approach keeps you from “spiritually bypassing,” or attempting to put yourself in new circumstances without embracing the way your life currently stands.

Life transformation is alchemical. It doesn’t happen when you force your way through bad feelings or attempt to paper over them with positive emotions. This is the art of embracing, rather than rejecting, where you are in the moment.

Change happens when you use your imagination to transmute states like irritation, boredom, and disenchantment into feelings that make your forward movement even just slightly easier.

Contrary to popular thought, imagining new circumstances doesn’t require heroic feats of will. The most potent, reality-shifting forms of motivation paradoxically feel the most effortless.
