The Art of Dreaming: 4 Reasons Why You Must Dream Big
The dream is the only hope
Dreaming and fantasizing about things is a quality associated with every child.
As children, we all in one way or the other dreamt about doing something with our lives when we grow up.
And growing up, we always had something in mind that whenever we’re asked about what we wanted to do, without mimicking words, with excitement, we answered this or that.
But as we get older, some of us lose those aspects of us. Something I believe it’s by the environment and also the system that we were taken through which we were told about things we should and shouldn’t do. That, who we are wasn’t taken into consideration before forcing those things on us.
This, to some extent, make most people lost themselves and the few that strive on, achieving and living their dreams become a struggle.
I’m a victim of that, and the same is you. You know!
That, to achieve those dreams and live the life you want, only God knows the psychological, emotional and the physical struggle you go or going through.
But in all of it, what makes you optimistic is the dream that you have. That, no matter the struggles you’re going through, you still keep your head high — something you haven’t thought of, I guess.
And I say this because the last couple of days have been very challenging for me — feeling unmotivated and hopeless. And from my reflections, I’ve realised that the dream we have — those aspirations, the people we want to become tomorrow, these things are the hope and the energy that bring or keep us on track whenever we feel like we don’t want to pursue anything anymore.
For once, I heard the actor, comedian and T.V host Steve Harvey say the only way to overcome the difficulties of life, is with your dreams.
I couldn’t understand him well when I heard him say that. But from what I’ve experienced in these couple of days with my life, I understand him now.
Because, if it hadn’t been for my dreams, I don’t even think I’ll have the energy to write again as emotionally, I was down to zero.
By this experience, I tell you why you must dream big and never stop dreaming.
1. Dreams are the fuel that propels one’s life to the next level
Have you wondered why the idea of dreaming has become the topic that almost everyone talks about the internet today?
Have you thought about the reason coaches and experts tell people to fantasize and visualize about their dreams or what they want out life?
Why do you think is the reason people are told to review their dreams every day or do vision boards?
Because doing this comes with motivation due to the dopamine that’s released in your brain, which puts you in a pleasurable state.
And it’s this joy — this feeling that propels you to take action to actualise the dream. Langston Hughes said it well;
“Hold fast to the dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”
And from the quote, you’ll realise that our dreams are the energy that keeps us going through this life.
2. Dreams gives us the power to overcome daily life’s struggle
The most incredible resource to overcoming one’s life problem is with their dreams. With this, everyone will tell you when you ask them. I’m living proof of that.
That, as someone born into a family of illiterates and a community regarded as a ghetto where there weren’t achievers to inspire us to become “someone” when we grew up, one thing I can boast of that has brought me this far in my life is my dreams. That, no matter the difficulties and the challenges, I keep on standing on my grounds and doing what I can to be somebody in the world.
And even with where I’ve gotten to in my life, whenever I’m faced with challenges and struggles, it’s the dream that I have that makes me overcome it and find myself again. And same is the many out there as Steve Harvey said;
“The only way to overcome life’s difficulties is with your dreams.”
3. With dreams, we’re able to take risks that we wouldn’t usually take
The late Jim Rohn said something which I believe is the reason people take risks that they wouldn’t normally take. And it’s this;
“If you are not willing to risk the usual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.”
And with this quote, you can understand why people stretch themselves and go the extent mile. It’s all because of their dreams — that which they want, the kind of people they want to become.
I’m not particularly eager to talk about myself when writing, but I have to be honest with you that I risked my life through the Sahara desert and cross the Mediterranean sea to get to Europe.
Why?
Because I didn’t like life, I was living, aside from that. I realised if I were going to live my dreams, I needed to change my environment. And while here in Europe, I’m still taking risks. And it’s all because I want to become the person I see whenever I close my eyes to see my future. And there are many out there doing same. And that’s by the power of dreams.
Steve Jobs did that, and today, we have the Apple products that we're enjoying. Bill Gates, Mark Zukerberg, Nelson Mandela etc. All these people were able to take the risks that they took because of their dreams and by it, you and I have the world as it is today, including the good we’re enjoying from it.
4. Dreams are what makes life beautiful
Imagine a world where there aren’t people dreaming.
How would life feel like? What meaning would you find out of this life?
Would you have a reason to get out of bed in the morning whenever the day is here?
If your answers to these questions aren’t as encouraging as mine, then I guess you understand the power behind dreams and why you must dream big.
Because with the dreams that we have, we wake up from those cosy beds and don’t continue to sleep. Our dreams are what gives us the reasons to live and keep us going when the going gets tough.
It’s also what makes the world beautiful as it is. Because all these great inventions and lifestyles we’re enjoying come from people’s dreams.
Wim Wenders said it well;
“Without dreams, there can be no courage. And without courage, there can no be action.”
Final thoughts
With my experiences with life and on the planet, one thing I’ve discovered is that the world is what it is because of dreams. And dreams are the reasons people find the courage to live even when life is tough.
Because with dreams, no matter what you’re going through, you’re able to stand firm and fight to the end of your destiny. With dreams, one can define themselves, create their life path, make astute life decisions and choose from the lots that life throws at us.
Therefore, I would encourage you to dream big as with it; you’re able to go through life’s challenges without falling.
Dream big because it costs nothing.
