Summary

The art of concise writing is akin to packing lightly for a trip, requiring intention and precision to select only the most essential words.

Abstract

Concise writing is likened to the challenge of packing minimally for a holiday, necessitating a deliberate choice of words much like selecting only the truly necessary items for travel. This form of writing is not about filling a large suitcase with "what if" items but about editing down to the essentials that will effectively convey the message and engage the reader. The principle of "less is more" is emphasized, suggesting that a few well-chosen words can leave a lasting impact, similar to how a small amount of exquisite perfume can leave a lingering fragrance. The article implies that writers must adapt their style, sometimes providing more detail and other times stripping down their prose to its core elements for clarity and effectiveness.

Learning to pack your words

Concise writing is hard: it’s like light packing for a holiday. It’s much easier to fill a 20 kgs suitcase with all your “what if” items than packing a light handbag with the things you will really need. But that exercise requires intention, precision and sometimes repacking, leaving things behind.

As writers, we need to be chameleons and flex our packing muscles: sometimes we need the heavy luggage, but other times we need to learn to declutter and select the essentials, the precise words that will take our audience in our journey and travel to our destination.

Less is more” has never been more true in the world of writers. Just like an exquisite perfume, you only need a couple of drops, or in this case words to leave your fragrance behind…
