The Art of Balance: Jedi V Sith

A look at the Grey side of the Force

The great saga of the Force, the power that spans the universe, divided in the teachings of the Jedi, and the obsession of Power of the Sith, took place over nine movies. The nine movies in question showed us the Skywalker legacy. Anakin Skywalker, when we meet him is a child of hope, and a destiny he has not yet seen. Qui-Gon Jin believed that Anakin was a child built on the prophecy of the one to find balance in the Force. His destiny was great. Maybe too great, for one child to achieve.

The Passion of the Skywalkers

The prequel series episode 1–3 show us his journey from becoming a Jedi to his dark path to the Sith. Passion and arrogance always ruled Anakin, a trait we saw that was passed on throughout his generation, in his children, and even his grandchild.

In the first series that was made, episodes 4–6, we meet Darth Vader, and through Luke’s eyes; we learn of his dark past. Even knowing all the horrible things Darth Vader did, Luke believed he had good within him. The good that Darth Vader eventually showed when he saved his son from Palpatine finally showing the courage, he should have still had in Episode III if he hadn’t been so afraid of Padme’s fate.

The Danger of the Force

With the many gifts, the force gives it can be just as deadly. The prophetic powers the Force gives are dangerous. Anakin foresaw his mother’s death and eventually witnessed it. It was for this reason that when he foresaw Padme’s death in childbirth; he believes it was true and his opening for Palpatine to use against him to turn him towards the Dark Side of the Force.

What Exactly is the Dark Side of the Force?

The Dark side focuses on passion, putting your needs above others, and an incessant need for power. Siths use people’s need for power and dominance for their own uses. One of the reason’s that Anakin falls for the Sith’s powers, is a story the Emperor tells him of a Jedi who could use the power of healing to bring someone back from death. Unfortunately, Anakin never learns this power, and becomes consumed with grief and determined to find power and dominance over, all as a way to cope with the loss of Padme.

Full Circle

Now, we enter the last three films that circle around the son of Leia and Han Solo who of course is also the Grandchild of Darth Vader. Naturally, with that great bloodline, the Sith has been after this child, Ben Solo, whispering into his mind since he was too young to choose which path to follow.

Ben Solo, known throughout the film as Kylo Ren, has learned the ways of the Force, from Luke Skywalker, and from Supreme Leader Snoke who we find out in the final installment, has been basically a puppet of Palpatine all along. On the opposite side, we have Rey the Scavenger, who had powers of the Jedi that are only found by Kylo Ren.

Eventually, in the third and last installment, we find out that they are a dyad in the Force. Two that are meant to be one. Together they are the balance of the Force, the grandson of Darth Vader, and the Grandaughter of the Emperor. The Force gives Rey the tools for her to save the Rebels and in turn eradicate the Final Order. The Last Order of her Grandfather. Unfortunately, the Force, while being able to give her the power of the Force, did not give her the strength to live through it.

Ben eventually returns and does the one thing that Anakin could never do and brings Rey back to life, showing that the story Palpatine told Anakin was true. Ironically Ben saves Rey using power the Sith coveted above all else, ensuring that Rey would bring balance to the Force that had been divided for so long.

Rey saw both sides of the Force. The Jedi way and the Sith way, and the fact that Ben was able to come back to the light after everything, I can only see her teaching that without darkness there can be no light. That passion itself can be both dark and Light.
