The Answer to Your Question of What’s My Purpose in The World
A story to inspire you to find your purpose
One topic that has dominated the world in the last few years is purpose.
What does it mean? Unlike yesterday’s where we just lived, people now don’t want only to live. They want to live for something. They want meaning in their lives. And the same is you, I know.
But, whether or not you have discovered your purpose, what I’m going to explain will help you be sure of living in that direction. And If you haven’t, too, you will from my explanation.
What is purpose, first of all?
“If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I am living for, in detail, ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully for the thing I want to live for.” — Thomas Merton
What is purpose? What will you say if someone asks you? Don’t resort to the dictionary. We’re looking at your understanding of the word and what you know about it.
Do you even know it? I do. And here is my definition; Purpose is the reason something exists. It gives meaning to something. Everything, irrespective of its beauty, charm, and attraction, doesn’t make sense without a purpose. So, it defines the importance and the reason something receives time and attention and why anything that happens, happens. Without it, life has no meaning.
In short, what makes up purpose is the reason something exists. Either by the problem, it’s solving or the answers it’s given.
So, how do you discover your purpose? I’m giving it to you right away.
How I came to discover my purpose
It was on the 3rd of April, 2017. They had just rescued us on the Mediterranean sea. The month-long journey of crossing the ocean to Italy has finally ended. We’re safe now. A trip of risk between life and death is over. At last, my dream of relocating from Africa and poverty to Europe in search of a better life and living my dreams is coming to fruition.
On the 5th of April, we land in Sicily, Italy. They take us off the rescue ship to a refugee camp.
One week, two weeks, a month. They transfer me to Taranto in the Puglia region of Italy. I meet other African immigrants, and they share their experiences with me. The environment and the nature of affairs didn’t suit my liking. I hadn’t risked my life between life and death to come live retched. I’ve come to Europe. I need to live luxuriously. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
I got in touch with others I know in Europe. My dream was to get to the UK, go to school, and live the good life. But, my contact in London wasn’t in the position to help out. So, I spoke to someone in Spain. He gave me the green light to come if I could take the risk.
Sure! Why can’t I? Even between life and death, I’ve done it. How much more risk from Italy to Spain? The reason was that I didn’t have the required documentation to travel. Fast-forward, I investigate how I can embark on such a journey. They told me Naples is the place for everyone to travel out of Italy without legal documents. I speak my cousin about it. He sent me money. I escaped the refugee camp, moved to Naples, looked for those in charge of such transactions, and told them my intention.
We engaged in the transaction. I embarked on to Spain. Finally, we get to the France border. A policeman came, asked for my document, and I showed it to him.
No question. I’m good to go. I’ve overcome the first hurdle by grace. So we move on the long journey. Finally, we got to the Spain border, I fell asleep, and we were in Barcelona when I woke. I thank God for a successful trip amidst the risk that they would have deported me back to Africa because I had a false document if they had caught me.
Now, after getting to Spain, my host receives me. To become a legal residence, I go through every process I’m supposed to, but everything will be solid when I get a job. So I got a job at a restaurant, working as a waiter.
What choice do I have even if I don’t like the job? I’m an immigrant. I just came into the country. On top of it, I’m an African. And looking at the racial situation at the place, you don’t get such jobs as a Blackman. So I have to be grateful and not act as if it’s a low-status job because I was working at a radio station back home. The position allows me to be a resident of the country due to my taxes.
I work and ensure I take care of my responsibilities diligently. My bosses realized I wasn’t unlike other immigrants. I acted responsibly and calmly in situations. By that, they wanted to take advantage of me. They wouldn’t pay my salary like they should when the month is due because they knew the job was securing my stay in the country, and I wouldn’t have peace without it.
Nobody takes me for a fool. I fight for my rights, especially when it comes to money. But, unfortunately, these bosses developed a hatred for me for not allowing them to take me for granted and started abusing me. They were morons. And I wouldn’t quit the job until my contract was over because I needed it to secure my stay.
But, during that period and what I had faced in my life looking back, I asked myself; Is this my reality? Is it all suffering I was born to suffer? Why am I not getting life right and happy like others? What’s wrong with me? Was I born to be poor, struggle and die? And that’s it?
There should be an answer to my plight. As I was searching for the answer, I chanced on self-improvement. I discovered that whether you’re born poor or rich, what makes you successful in life is education and your willingness to pay the price for what you want.
That day that I found out, I started my journey of educating myself, and in doing it, something happened. I discovered that all the struggles we are going through are our lack of self-knowledge and what to do. We don’t have a clear vision of ourselves and what we are brought into the world to do. That’s the source of all human suffering in the world.
So, I made it my purpose to teach people about life to get the best out of it.
Now, from what I’ve shared so far about myself, have you seen how I came to find my purpose? Have you noticed I found myself through my struggles?
That’s how we discover our purpose in the world. It happens through hardships. Sometimes, it’s in things you see in the world that you don’t like, and you tell yourself, I’m going to change it, and you take on the battle.
Nelson Mandela is an example of it. Mother Theresa, Rosa Parks. These people lived purposeful lives because of the problems they solved in the world.
So, what challenges are you facing in life? What problems do you find in the world and like to change? That’s your purpose. So, if all this while you’ve struggled on finding your purpose, I’ve revealed it to you.
Your struggles are who you are and your purpose
“The two most important days in life are the day you born and the day you discover the reason why.” — Mark Twain
Who am I? That’s what we ask when we want to know our purpose in the world.
The reason? Who we are is attached to our purpose. So when we want to know our purpose, we look for who we are.
Think deeply about it. You’ll find the two are related. When you discover yourself, you find your purpose. Likewise, when you find your purpose. You find out who you are. That’s what happened to me. When I saw my purpose, I found myself, too.
“I was born to educate people about life and discover themselves to have beautiful experiences.”
You must understand it. Those struggles and difficulties haven’t come to you because of anything. They have come to you because that’s who you are. They are here to reveal you to yourself. Also, anything you’re seeing in the world that you hate could be why you are born. It’s your problem to solve. So, if you’ve been looking for your purpose, look further no more. I’ve brought you the answer. Just look at what’s happening in your life, and you’ll discover it.
Final thoughts
Finding your purpose in life isn’t difficult. But, if it is, I believe it because they haven’t taught you “how”?
But, based on the event that led me to find mine, I can tell that your purpose is what you’re going through — your struggles.
So, stop today from searching somewhere. It’s nowhere apart from around you. And make the deliberate effort to ask yourself the honest questions as to why you’re struggling as I did, and you’ll find it.
I promise you that.
