Abstract

d over the phone like I was?

How about this: Try to picture Ivanka, the object of her creepy father’s even creepier lust, punching a time clock! That will happen around the same time I start flying jets.

Maybe I’m being overly sensitive. I mean, if I could make my own sea salt while basking under the Mediterranean sun, wouldn’t I bleat about it later? Shit, no. I would not.

So you know, the column’s focus was on scent and how it evokes particular memories. Here is the passage that set me off:

When I was in Spain this summer, we sun-dried our own sea salt in Majorca, then went to a little shop near where we ate dinner to buy flor de sal harvested from the same Ses Salines salt flats. When I popped open the can — later back at home, my kids shouted, “it smells like Majorca!”

“Gee, kids! How cool is that? Know what? Get outta here”

For those of us who don’t vacation in Majora, flor de sal means Salt Flower. Now, is it me, or is this type of self-important strutting gag-worthy?

I’m not so offended by the message as much as I am by the way it was conveyed. As if the messenger had no clue of the disparity around her and the reality that people are struggling to make ends meet, for God’s sake. Struggling to feed themselves and their families. Working for minimum wage.

I get that this magazine is about beauty, not our country’s economy but all I can say is, the salaries must be pretty damned good.

We, as writers, understand that words are powerful and the way in which we say things is as important, or maybe more so, as what we’re putting out into the world. I’ve learned this particular lesson the hard way. More than once.

Admittedly, I’m particularly sensitive in that I haven’t received an actual paycheck in almost two years. And I’m better than that. Much better, yet I can’t seem to catch a break. So, where someone else might read the editorial and think of it as “aspirational,” I think, “WTF?” Just as I do when I see TV commercials touting luxury automobiles as holiday gifts. What world are we living in?

This is what doesn’t compute: While the editor raves about her kids raving about Majorca, there are other, less privileged children starving in this country. Their parents would love to afford a bus ticket, let alone a first-class airline ticket to Spain.

A little empathy for others, folks. That’s all I’m asking.

According to nokidhungry.org, in the United States, one in seven children lives with hungry. The bigger picture: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), more than eleven hundred children in our country live in “food insecure homes,” which means the family members don’t get enough to eat in order to live in a manner that’s deemed “healthy.”

Maybe the editor should set her cannister of DIY sea salt aside and chew on these stats:

Over 4.5 million U.S. kids live in food deserts and lack access to grocery stores with fresh fruits and vegetables.

On average, children in rural areas are more likely to experience food insecurity and lack access to quality health services.

Close to 1 in 3 American children are overweight or obese, and obesity in children has more than tripled over the past 35 years, putting children at higher risk for serious, even life-threatening health problems.

In communities where Save the Children works, an average of 59 percent of children do not have access to fresh, healthy foods; in some areas, it’s as much as 98 percent.

Here’s more self-satisfied bunk from the editorial:

In (country), last summer, my daughter and I treated ourselves one afternoon to tea at the (uber-luxe) hotel. Now, the scent of not only jasmine tea but also jasmine fragrances brings me half a world away to that fancy dining room, nibbling on tiny sandwiches

Options

and cakes.

Again, maybe I’m being unfair and bristly. But the manner in which this was written is offensive, in my humble opinion. Plus, the older I get, the less idiocy I can tolerate.

Maybe if she’d included some type of giveaway to the first fifty readers who wrote back via email, describing their favorite scents and what they evoked for them. Jasmine fragrance oil could be the giveaway. I don’t know.

Perhaps this editor should stick to writing about lip conditioners and designer perfumes and the wonders of glycolic acid. Meanwhile, if the craving for a “tiny cake” should come upon her, she could always shove a Twinkie up her bum.

I’d like to thank Helen Cassidy Page for her input here. She gave me the virtual slap upside the head that I needed. But, sweetly.

Sherry McGuinn is a slightly-twisted, longtime Chicago-area writer and award-winning screenwriter. Her work has appeared in The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and numerous other publications. Sherry’s manager is currently pitching her newest screenplay, a drama with dark, comedic overtones and inspired by a true story.

As always, I appreciate your reading. If you’re up for more:

Haiku How-To

A primer for the sexually inquisitive.

medium.com

Did I Fail My Mother?

All the things I should have said, and didn’t.

medium.com

The Hot Women of Medium

Smart, funny, gutsy and SMOKIN’!

medium.com

I’ve Never Received 1K Claps

Wounded…and wondering.

medium.com

It’s Official: I’m an A-Hole

“Medium Madness” has me by the throat.

medium.com

The Anatomy of the $100+ Article Ideas

Steal my Ideation Formula to upgrade

After writing for the last 2 years, I’ve figured out the exact process to come up with unlimited ideas that people want to read.

After trying out all of those processes, I made $100+ from every article I wrote.

So, if you want to know what that exact process is to come up with unlimited $100+ article ideas, then read till the end.

Ideation Masterclass

So, this is Ep.4 of the ‘Writer Phase’ — Ideation Masterclass Part 1.

If you don’t know what it is, read this article here to get an idea of what the ‘Writer Phase Series’ is all about.

In short: I started the Writer Phase Series inside my newsletter(click here to join), where I help new and small writers build a $5k a month writing biz from scratch for free, and it’s Ep.4.

In this episode, I will share with you my exact process to come up with unlimited $100+ article ideas in the next 5 mins.

Before We Start

My goal here is to help you solve these problems:

 • Not knowing what to write about
 • Not knowing which topic you’re good in
 • Not having any engaging idea about the topic you want to write

Listen, the first rule of the Idea Generation process is that — Don’t judge whether your idea is good or bad.

Your main goal here is to list down as many ideas as you can, knowing that you just need to pick a few of the best — leave about 90% of them.

Now, let’s begin The Idea Generation Process…

1. The 3 Question Test

Start by asking yourself these 3 questions:

 • What are the things I learned in the past 2 years?
 • What are the things I’m most interested in the past 2 years?
 • What problems and challenges did I face and solve in the past 2 years?

Why write about what you learned, are interested in, and the problems you faced and how you solved them in the past 2 years?

The thing is, you think that no one wants to read your article because you’re not an expert in that topic.

But the reality is that people want to learn from those who are just a step ahead of them, not from some pro “expert.”

So don’t judge yourself and share your story.

So, to answer those 3 questions, grab your notebook and write down what you learned, are interested in, and problems you solved — everything without any judgment.

For example:

I learned to write online and build a writing business.

I faced problems like not knowing how to run a newsletter, use AI, and build an audience.

I solved my problems by starting my own newsletter, using AI to make over $27k, and building an audience of over 70,000 followers across all platforms.

Now pick the 3 topics you want to go with.

For example, I picked these 3:

 • Writing Online
 • Newsletter
 • AI

Now be specific and convert your broad topics into writing ideas like this:

How I Made My First $1 Writing Online.

How I Grew My Newsletter To 2k In 2 Months.

How I Made My First $17 Using My Newsletter.

My First $13k Selling AI T-shirts In 60 Days.

You see, I went from three questions to broad topics to ideas that are related to my past experiences.

The plus point of this ideation strategy is that you can come up with unlimited ideas that are emotionally attached to you.

This way, you can write in your own authentic voice.

I just picked three topics and came up with three ideas, but you can twist and tweak those same topics to come up with as many ideas as you want, like this:

How I Made $410,000 Writing 2hrs a Day.

My Plan To Make $10k Using My Newsletter In 6 Months.

How I Made $23k Using AI In 90 Days.

2. 4A Framework

Now, we have 3 main topics using ‘The 3-Question Test.’

Now, let me show you how you can write about any topic or idea in 4 unlimited ways using the 4A Framework:

 • Actionable (here’s how I did it)
 • Analytics (here are the numbers)
 • Aspirational (yes, you can do it)
 • Anthropological (here’s why)

Let me show you using my example.

So, here’s the topic that I want to write about: AI Newsletter.

Now, let me show you how you can generate unlimited viral ideas from this single topic.

1.Actionable

These types of content give readers actionable advice to follow, such as

 • Step-by-step guides
 • Hacks
 • Tips
 • Systems

For example:

How I Built a $1.5k AI Newsletter Biz in 90 Days.

How He Built a $70k Newsletter Empire Using ChatGPT.

7 Steps to Build an AI Newsletter With $0.

Copy My 2-Hour System to Build a $10k/m AI Newsletter Biz.

2. Analytics

These types of content break down numbers. You can use your main topic or idea to generate more ideas by adding numbers to it.

For example:

How Much I Made From AI Newsletter With 1,479 Subs.

How I Made My First $1,217 Using AI Newsletter.

How He Made $1,120,000 Selling His AI Newsletter.

3. Aspirational

This type of content revolves around these four things:

 • Lessons
 • Mistakes
 • How to start and Why you need
 • Your own thoughts.

For example:

5 Lessons I Learned Running a $10k/m AI Newsletter.

I Made My First $1k Using AI Newsletter; Here’s What I’ve Learned.

7 Mistakes That Destroyed My AI Newsletter Biz.

How This 15-Year-Old Kid Started a $10k AI Newsletter Biz with $0.

Why You Need to Start an AI Newsletter as Fast as You Can.

My Personal Opinion After Making $10k Using AI Newsletter.

Why You Don’t Need to Start an AI Newsletter.

4. Anthropological

These types of content share actual experiences like:

 • Success
 • Fear
 • Failure
 • Why everyone is wrong
 • Struggle

For example:

How I Built and Sold My AI Newsletter For 6 Figures in 7 Months.

7 Reasons You Failed To Make $10k Using AI Newsletter.

Here’s Why AI Newsletter Is The Next Big Thing For Small Writers.

How I Made My First $100 After 3 months Of Running AI Newsletter.

How I Grew My 120 Subs AI Newsletter To 1,109 In 3 Weeks.

You see, By using the 4A Framework, I generated 19 article ideas from one topic (AI Newsletter) in less than 5 minutes.

If you do the same with 3 topics, that means 50–60 viral article ideas in under 30 minutes.

This is the power of the 4A framework strategies.

Now let’s move on to the last one that’s going to completely change the way you organize your idea generations…

3. Highlight The One

Now, you have a list of unlimited ideas that you can write for months, but here’s the point: you don’t need to write all of them.

Just pick only 7 from the list to write one daily for a week.

At the end of the week, try these ideation methods again to come up with fresh and new viral article ideas.

Every week, you can pick different topics, but remember only to choose those topics that you’re interested in or have some knowledge about.

It totally depends on you, which topic you want to write about or how many ideas you want to select and write from the list you generated.

I suggest you pick 7–10 ideas every time you generate a list of ideas and choose your main 3 topics to write about (later you can change it whenever you want).

You: That’s it.

Me: No, it’s just the cherry on top.

There is a lot more to cover when it comes to idea generation, and you have to know everything to come up with great ideas.

So, in EP.5 of Writer Phase — Ideation Masterclass Part 2, I will share with you my Research Or Repurpose Idea Generation System that will help you to come up with article ideas that are already making money.

Are you ready for that?

If so, then follow TheAlex and Subscribe to My Newsletter so you don’t miss the next episode…

Also, a little request : I spend a lot of time to write these in-depth articles for you.

In return, all I want is for you to hit that clap 50x and comment down below what you learned and if this article was helpful.

It will help me a lot and motivate me to write more for you.

Thank you in advance. Your support means a lot.
