The Alarming Shift in Dentistry. What you need to know before your next appointment.

A visit to the dentist has historically been associated with receiving quality healthcare and expert advice on maintaining oral well-being. However, an alarming trend has been surfacing in recent years, where some dental practices appear to prioritize financial gains over the genuine care of their patients. What was once a noble profession dedicated to improving patients’ oral health has seemingly transformed into a finance-driven industry.
This article aims to shed light on the concerning shift in the dental profession, where profit takes precedence over patient care. We will explore real-life patient testimonials from Google, including my own harrowing experience, to understand the implications of this profit-driven approach on patients’ well-being and trust.

- The Profit-Driven Dental Landscape
The dental industry has undoubtedly evolved, embracing modern technologies and advancements that enhance patient care. However, amidst this progress, some dental practices have lost sight of their primary mission: to prioritize the health and well-being of their patients. Instead, they focus on pushing unnecessary treatments and procedures to maximize financial gains.
Patient testimonials, like those from Yanay Viera Lorenzo and Joe Donzelli, paint a worrying picture of dental practices over-treating patients with crowns and fillings, sometimes even without justifiable reasons. Such practices have a direct impact on patient trust and the integrity of the dental profession.
- My Personal Nightmare: A Free Consultation Gone Wrong
During a recent visit to a dental practice for a free consultation, I was informed that I needed a Root Canal and a Crown. Assuming that my insurance would cover a significant portion of the cost, I was shocked to learn that both procedures were not fully covered. To my surprise, the dental hygienist took it upon herself to run my credit for a staggering $70,000 loan to finance the treatments. In what world does a root canal and crown cost $70,000.00? They must have had other plans that they didn’t make me aware of, but come-on, this was beyond crazy!
As I sat in the dental chair, I received an alert on my phone from my credit monitoring company, notifying me of the unauthorized credit check. The entire situation left me feeling utterly bewildered and taken advantage of. I questioned why a dental office would resort to such tactics, especially without my knowledge or consent.
When I confronted the hygienist about the supposed free consultation, she launched into a well-rehearsed spiel about the advantages of the financing option. It became apparent that this was a common routine, preying on patients’ vulnerability to secure their financial interests. I had to summon all my courage to walk away from the situation, despite the pressure exerted by the dentist, hygienist, and even their finance staff.
What troubled me most was that nothing seemed to be wrong with my teeth that necessitated such extensive and expensive procedures. I had visited for a routine cleaning, and now I found myself caught in a web of unnecessary treatments and financial pressure.

- Patients’ Google Reviews: A Reflection of the Profit-First Approach
Yanay Viera Lorenzo’s Google review reflects the consequences of falling into the trap of a profit-driven dental practice. He shares his regret at ignoring negative reviews and recommends checking insurance copays before visiting a dental office. Yanay’s experience highlights the importance of researching dental practices thoroughly to avoid falling prey to their financial interests.
Similarly, Joe Donzelli’s Google review echoes a sentiment shared by many patients who have experienced profit-driven dentistry. He was convinced into unnecessary treatments, leading to multiple crowns and a root canal that might not have been necessary if not for the profit-focused approach of the dental practice.
- The Impact on Patient Trust and Well-being
The profit-driven approach in dentistry not only undermines patient trust but also has far-reaching consequences on overall well-being. Patients deserve transparency and ethical treatment options based on their actual oral health needs. When profit takes precedence, patients may be over-treated, leading to unnecessary physical and financial burdens.
The financial pressure and anxiety experienced by patients can have a significant impact on their mental and emotional health. Patients might develop apprehensions about seeking dental care, leading to neglected oral health, which further exacerbates their overall well-being.

In Conclusion
The shift in dentistry towards prioritizing profit over patient care is a concerning trend that demands attention and action. Patients’ testimonials, including my personal experience, illustrate the real-life implications of such practices. As consumers, we must educate ourselves, seek second opinions, and question treatment recommendations that seem excessive or unnecessary.
Dentists and dental professionals must rededicate themselves to the core values of the profession, prioritizing patient care and ethical decision-making. Transparent communication about treatment options and financial matters is crucial to rebuilding trust and integrity in the dental industry.
By holding dental practices accountable and advocating for patient-centric care, we can work towards restoring dentistry’s noble mission of safeguarding and improving oral health for all. Patients deserve the best possible care, free from the influence of financial motivations, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that dentistry remains a bastion of genuine care and compassion.
