The A-Z of My Favourite Travel Destinations — Nanning, China
February 2007 — In time for the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Our four weeks in Sanya, China’s version of Hawai’i had come to an end. The rent for our condo in Sanya was going to triple for the next two weeks because of the Chinese New Year celebrations. We had to leave as our condo had been rented out long before we planned our winter break holiday.

Once off the plane in Nanning, we checked into our hotel and then began to walk around the city, in the older central part. Preparations for the Chinese New Year were seen in quite a few locations, including this installation in the main square of the city.

This was our first Chinese New Year in China following our move to the country almost six months earlier. We continued our walk using our city map and a guide we found on the Internet. We wanted to see as much of the place as we could before we were to fly home to Changzhou and resume our teaching duties.

In another park, there were an assortment of interesting sculptures including this one which looked like it was a copy of the Witch statue we had seen in Bratislava, Slovakia. It was different, but not much.

Chinese New Year’s Eve was a night I will never forget. The fireworks were out of this world. And, they went on all night. The noise was as if we were in the middle of a war zone. When we finally went out in the morning, the dragon parades were being prepared.

Now, for a shout out to other travellers around the world at Globetrotters.
Keith Kelley writes about a day in Norway:
Closer to home [next door neighbour] Ophélie Quillier writes about Manitoba, Canada [I’m from Saskatchewan].
And finally, Belcairn tells us about a chateau in France, turned into a hotel that I have never visited:
