The A-Z of My Favourite Travel Destinations — Merida, Mexico

February 2009 — El Carnaval

We had just finished two years spent teaching at a university in China and weren’t ready to spend a long, very cold winter on the Canadian prairies. We rented out a casa along the beach in a small pueblo called Chuburna for January, February, and March.

We had gone to the nearby city of Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan province a few times, mostly to be shown the sites by our neighbour along the southern shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Typically, these trips were for exploring the city and its sites.

We decided to rent a place in the city for the Carnaval, which was supposed to be the biggest such event outside of Rio de Janeiro. Unlike its famous counterparts in Brazil and the USA, this event was significantly more family-friendly.

Of course, at night, the costumes and floats were adult-focused, yet no sensibilities would have been offended. For the evening parades, we spent one night on our balcony and the next we were just a few rows back in a seated section enjoying Mexican confections while the floats, dancers, and entertainments passed by.
