The A — Z of My Favourite Travel Destinations — E is for Ecuador

We had spent three winters in Ecuador before the Pandemic grounded us. Our home in Ecuador was a grand, old house in Olon, a fishing village. In January 2018, less than a week in this old house, the owner appeared with his four-year-old son to stay in a different building on the property.
He had left Ecuador as a teenager. His son soon adopted us as grandparents. This was a holiday for the two of them back in his homeland. The little boy was always at our place which was across the garden in the large yard.

The owner took us on a day trip to the Poor Man’s Galapagos, a short boat ride from the town of Puerto Lopez. We got up close and almost personal with blue-footed boobies and many sea lions.
Once he left, we began to learn more about our new winter home. As I said, it was a fishing village, but we learned just exactly what that meant. They had periodic community fishing efforts along the shore at the edge of the village.

As I recorded the event, we were offered fish. The fish was being given away to everyone regardless of whether or not they could pay. This reminded me of our life in the far north where the community shared the wealth of a hunt.

At the end of the beach, high up on a dip in the rock formation, there is an orphanage. The ex-pats of the community find all kinds of reasons to offer support as the orphanage doesn’t receive much funding from the government. For the next three years, we were involved with helping as much as we could.

It doesn’t take much to make a difference. For us, Ecuador made it easier for us to feel at home enough to stop being tourists.
I would like to invite you to read other A-Z stories here at Globetrotters. The first author, Michael Rhodes has this story about Belize that caught my interest as we had spent a month there.
A second author I am recommending is Jerry Dwyer who wrote about Auckland, Australia, a place that I now want to visit.
