“Gratitude is a miracle drug.” — James Altucher
“Gratitude and anger can’t exist in the head at the same time” — Gerry Jampolsky
I’m at the point in life where I try to find gratitude wherever I can, any time I can… even in the midst of deep shit.
It helps me.
It never seems to fail to elevate my mood to become grateful. I think we can get stuck in the sadness and fear too damn much.
I know I can.
I think when left alone, my mind automatically goes to the fearful thoughts. It could be because of my childhood, my upbringing, being raised by a daughter of a Holocaust survivor, being bullied severely when in Jr. High School, or a combination of all of the above.
Whatever it is, I know I have a propensity for melancholy.
SO…I had a great idea last night!
These two words came to my brain: EXTREME GRATITUDE.
As an experiment I wanted to try being super duper grateful for every thing for one week — as an experiment!
Part of this is because in 10 days I will be leaving to go visit my 88 year old dad in Denver. His health has declined rapidly. He called me the other day saying “I’m not good. I’m not good at all…” I sensed an urgency in him.
He doesn’t have much time left so I got a plane ticket to visit him on May 22.
We’ve had quite the volatile, strained relationship for 57 years. Thinking of seeing him one last time is bringing up conflicting emotions.
In order for me to be mentally ‘prepared’ I want my mood to be peaceful and calm. So, a voice within me said, how bout trying EXTREME GRATITUDE to help your mood when visiting him??
So, here’ s my 7 Day Extreme Gratitude Diet”
I can pick ONLY from these menu items this week:
MENU ITEMS INCLUDE:
joy fun reading writing jokes friendship nature silliness creativity self care music naps cats
Almost every spiritual teacher, teaching and philosophy touts the merits of Gratitude, from Buddhism, to Christianity, New Age to Judaism, to OPRAH!
GRATITUDE WORKS!!
So here is my 7 DAY EXTREME GRATITUDE DIET PLAN:
1. I will write my GRATITUDE LIST DAILY and read it aloud with conviction daily.
2. I write ONLY positive uplifting message posts on Medium (silly, lighthearted or uplifting posts. No dark or somber shit for a week.)
3. I will only work on editing my lighter happier chapters from my Memoir this week. (I will skip over the depressing abusive chapters. I can always get back to those later!)
4. When I wake and go to sleep I will remind myself of what I’m grateful for.

Here’s my first DAILY GRATITUDE LIST:
- Bob, my boyfriends business is good and his health is better, thank God.
- I live in the United States where I am lucky to have my freedom.
- I have great friends including my S*W*A*T team. Supportive Women Acknowledging Truths. LOL. (I assembled this team of super women!)
- My health is OK, for a 57 year old.
- I have a great kind and wonderful therapist.
- My Memoir is coming along nicely and I have a few wonderful friends/Beta Readers helping me stay on track. (I was asked to contribute a weekly article to a Memoir Magazine which sounds fun and will help me stay accountable too)
- We live in a peaceful and safe neighborhood.
- I have a huge tree outside my house and a new deck area with new lounge chair that I love! (I sat in it last night at 11 PM and watched the stars!)
- My writing mojo is back. I’m enjoying writing daily on Medium again after a hiatus.
- Our 4 ‘furballs’, ‘Angels with Fur’ (cats) are all healthy, happy and safe. Here are a few of them:
