The 7 colors of noise

A rainbow of relaxation and productivity.

Read this article for free with this link. Enjoy.

Are you aware of the benefits associated with listening to different colors of noise?

As a part of my recent research about happiness, body chemistry, and the science of sleep, I discovered all the different colors of noise. Its cool stuff.

You’ve heard of white noise, yes? White noise is often associated with a “shhhh” sound that researchers have proven to stop the mind from wandering and help its listeners relax or fall asleep.

What do you know about the other colors:

  • grey
  • pink
  • blue
  • brown
  • violet

Nothing?! That’s why you’re looking it up?

Then, let’s discuss all the colors, what they do, and how they might be helpful to you.

Grey — Widely considered as soothing because of its consistent loudness across frequencies. In the realm of sound, grey noise is used to mask other sounds. Those two things combined make grey noise a splendid choice for relaxing.

  • Interested in sampling some grey noise? Regrettably, only high-end audio programs or sound machines use this option. If you are really curious, you can try to find some options on YouTube. However, the authenticity of the sounds may be questionable.

Pink — Closely related to white noise, pink noise has a softer and more balanced sound. Studies show that pink noise can help with falling asleep as well as boosting cognitive function. I’ll leave it up to you to find out if it can help you.

  • Looking for a source? Unlike grey noise, you can easily find pink noise in apps used to aid with sleep, and people regularly use it to simulate natural environments.

Blue — This noise color is at a higher frequency than its white and pink counterparts. Blue noise encourages concentration and creativity, despite having some relaxing qualities. So it’s more useful as a means of productivity than sleep.

  • Where can you find it? As with grey noise, you can likely find some sources on YouTube, but outside of that, you’ll have to find sound software that offers it as an option.

Brown — Like grey noise, this color is excellent at masking other sounds. Its deep frequencies and rumbling nature create a calm atmosphere and promote tranquility. This makes brown noise the perfect companion for those who enjoy meditation.

  • Need some brown noise in your life? You can find it in apps that promote sleep, meditation, and relaxation.

Violet — Though further away on the spectrum, experts consider this color to be a modified form of white noise. Many people compare violet noise to a “hiss” or the sound of a fully open faucet.

  • Want to listen to some violet noise without endlessly running water? It has a common medical application in devices that helps people with the “ringing” symptoms linked to tinnitus. Don’t have tinnitus or access to one of those devices? You can try YouTube. As with the others, results may vary.

So now you know about the 7 colors of sound. They range in application from sleep aid, to meditation assistant, and even have medical purposes.

How many of you said what the heck, went back to count, and only found 6?

Yes, there is another color of sound. Kind of.

Green noise, aka “nature sounds”. Social media recently coined “green noise”, which quickly gained relevance overnight. Most people have probably heard the soothing sounds of ocean or rain tracks. People have long known about the relaxing and calming properties of this “new” color of sound.

  • Easily find examples on YouTube or Spotify.
  • + Side Note: this one is my favorite. Pure green noise puts me in a trance, and it get this almost tingling in my shoulders and neck. I’ll share a sample with you that you may also be enlightened.
  • I recommend head phones for the sake of immersion.

It almost sounds like standing in a windy tunnel or being in an airplane. Wait until you turn it off after you listen to it for a few minutes. The silence that follows is unnerving.

The trance like effect might have something to do with ADHD. Maybe the frequency holds some significance because of the under developed frontal lobe. I will research further.

Until then,…

Thanks for sticking around, and I hope this has been helpful enough that you incorporate at least one of these into your routine to promote relaxation or focus.
