Summary

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) has surpassed the highest-grossing movie, 'Avatar', in revenue, making over $6 billion since its 2013 release through game sales and in-game microtransactions, and is renowned for its expansive gameplay, detailed open-world environment, and continuous updates.

Abstract

GTA V, a record-breaking game in the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise, has achieved unprecedented financial success, out-earning the highest-grossing film in history. Launched initially for older generation consoles and later for newer consoles and PC, the game has sold over 130 million copies at prices starting from 60. Its development involved extensive research, including field trips and the collection of a vast amount of photographic and video material, with a production budget exceeding 250 million. The game features a fictional state modeled after Southern California, offering a massive open world that is one-eighth the size of Los Angeles. GTA V provides two primary modes of play: a story mode with a robust narrative featuring three controllable characters, and an online mode that supports cooperative play with friends and regular content updates. The game's enduring popularity is attributed to its diverse gameplay options, catering to players who enjoy single-player campaigns, multiplayer missions, racing, or simply exploring the virtual world. In-game purchases in the online mode contribute significantly to the game's revenue, with over $500 million generated from microtransactions.

The 6 Billion Dollar Game

How one game has made more money than any movie in History

‘Avatar’ which is the highest-grossing movie of all time has only made $2.7 Billion. Although $2.7 Billion dollars is not a small amount, it is still far behind ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ which has made over $6 Billion since it’s launch in 2013.

The game was first launched in 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360 then in 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One and finally, in 2015 it was launched for PC.

Grand Theft Auto was always a famous franchise. We all have either heard of it, played it, or know of someone who is completely obsessed with the game.

GTA 4 alone had sold 25 million copies so it’s no surprise that the game that replaces it with superior graphics and better gameplay has made more money than any entertainment product in history.

About the Game

The Game is based on a fictional state of San Andreas and Los Santos which is modeled on Los Angeles and the areas of Southern California.

The team of production conducted field trips and gathered over 250,000 pictures and hours of video footage for research.

At the time of release in 2013, it was one of the most expensive game to be ever produced with a budget of over $250 million.

The game even has a representation of several iconic Los Angeles landmarks like the ‘Hollywood’ sign which is depicted as the ‘Vinewood’ sign.

The game world covers 49 sq miles (127 sq km) which is also one-eighth of Los Angeles.

Game Play

You can play the game in two different modes :

  • Story Mode

The Game has a solid story mode where you control three different characters. You can do co-op heists, race cars, and various other missions.

You can also take, buy, or steal any car in the game from a non-player character and just goof around as much as you want or buy a company and be a CEO. You can even trade stocks.

  • Online Mode

The online mode is a bit of a grinder where you have to play a lot to make money. You can basically do all the things from the story mode in the online mode as well.

Additionally in the Online mode, you can partner up with your friends and run different missions.

While the story mode isn’t updated, the online mode gets constant updates letting you be able to do even more things within the game.

How the Game Makes Money

Even though the game is about 8 years old, it’s still in the monthly charts of the most selling games. Thus, constantly bringing in a lot of revenue. It is still one of the first game most people get when they buy a console.

Since its launch in 2013, the game has sold over 130 million copies.

The game was initially sold for $60 in its launch. Now it’s available for $29.99 on steam. You can pretty much see that the game has made a pretty good amount of money by selling just the copies.

Selling copies of GTA V though makes the bigger chunk of revenue it’s not the only way the game makes money. Once you buy the game, there are in-game purchases in the online mode where you can use an online payment gateway to buy more money in the game.

Online microtransactions also brings a good sum of revenue. It is also one of the reasons why Rockstar North constantly updates and brings new items into the game.

GTA V made over $500 million in micro transactions alone.

The reason why GTA V sells so much

I think the reason why GTA V is so successful is that it’s the perfect go-to game. It has something for everyone.

It has a solid single-player story campaign and a really good online mode where you can team up with other people and complete various missions. If you like to race cars, bikes, and boats you can also do that.

And if you don’t like all that and just want to goof around stealing cars and driving around, you can do that as well.

I personally like the co-op missions but every now and then I find myself just driving around the game.
