JOB, EMPLOYMENT

The 5 Things I Do in Notice Period After Resigning From My Job

Do this for a smoother transition.

How’s your life during notice period?

It’s always a difficult decision to resign from a job, but even more so when you have to give notice ⏳.

You want to make sure that you handle the situation with grace and professionalism, and that you leave your employer in a good place.

I have been through my share of job changes in the past 2 decades — and every transition made me smarter about what to do during notice period.

Here’s the 5 things I take care of.

1️⃣ — Tie Up Loose Ends

If there are any projects that I’m working on, I will make sure that I prioritize, plan, and finish them off or take it to a logical point and hand them over to someone else.

I don’t want my employer to have to deal with unfinished or undocumented work after I’m gone.

2️⃣ — Train My Replacement

I will take the time to train someone else to do my job. If a replacement is not immediately available, I will transfer the knowledge to the next best person from my team.

I will also make helpful resources — documentation, tips, guidelines — available in a shared place.

3️⃣ — Be Available for Questions

My colleagues and boss are going to have a lot of questions during this time, and I make sure I’m available to answer them.

I am always careful to stay respectful and professional in my responses, even if I feel frustrated at times.

4️⃣ — Don’t Badmouth Anyone

I may feel some resentment towards my manager or few colleagues at this point, but I know it’s important to keep it in check and not blow any steam 😤.

I have learned this the hard way, and I remind myself to not burn any bridges — you never know what future holds, and most of all, it’s unnecessary baggage I refuse to carry while moving on.

5️⃣ — Say Goodbye And Thanks

Finally, I make sure to say goodbye and thanks to my colleagues and boss. This is a difficult time for everyone, so I take the time to express my genuine appreciation for the people I’ve worked with.

It’s a small gesture, but it can mean a lot.

It’s not about what you say, it’s about how you make them feel.
