The 3 Tools You Need to Change Your Life
The best part is they're already in you.
1. Resilience
2. Growth mindset
3. Self-awareness
You don't need to do everything under the sun — all you need do is work on these three things to create your dream life.
Humans are made to create, and I believe this wholeheartedly. I think that when deprived of a creative outlet, dysfunction sets in — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. You will prosper if you allow yourself to engage in this most basic of pursuits.
The three tools I will discuss are just that—tools. Use them however you wish in whatever combination you desire! If you make an earnest attempt, I know you will be well on your way to a more fulfilling life. However, that looks. Walk with me.
Resilience drives your journey.
Resilience is the first tool because it is the fuel for your journey. Hardships and emotional distress are a feature of life, not a bug, and our ability to face these challenges will determine how far we go on this self-improvement journey. "Fall down seven, get up eight"—this is your motivation and drive.
I, myself, bang my head to Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping." You had to be there.
Resilience is the force that gets you back into the mud setback after setback. I will write more about the topic in another article, but I'd like to drop one of my favorite suggestions for building resilience: relationships. Having a solid support group is integral to the human experience. Even the most introverted among us are well-served by a community to turn to when things become difficult. Humanity got this far with each other. Many days, we forget that, so here's me advising you to build your connections so you may thrive.
Growth mindset
Now that our resilience is on point, we can adopt a "growth mindset."
Everything about this life is temporary except for you. The essence that is you is eternal—the rest will undergo numerous changes: decay, rebirth, and everything in between. Life is change—your body and mind change; why is it so hard to believe that change can happen for the better?
A growth mindset directly addresses the perception of failure. Rather than believing one's qualities are innate, consider that they are subject to change and, therefore, subject to cultivation. No one comes out of the womb painting like Michelangelo. Indeed, there may be a talent for it, but if it is left to follow, then… that's that.
Each of us possesses different aptitudes and interests — each of us can develop and grow.
With robust resilience, one can become invigorated by challenges. If you are focused on failure, that is a good sign that a shift needs to occur. All I ask is that you try. You may surprise yourself with your results and what you learn from the experience. At that point, you can apply your newfound knowledge to positive ends.
Not doing anything is a guaranteed failure, anyway. I may take the gamble.
It will feel weird and uncomfortable the first few times. That's okay! In this case, that's a sign you are progressing. Keep practicing, and it will get easier.
Self-awareness provides feedback
So now you're building your resilience and approaching your practice from the perspective that you are a catalyst of change in your life. This is the pathway to creating a life aligned with you and the path towards freedom. However, there is one more tool you need to work with.
Self-awareness is the master key to self-improvement. The ability to reflect on one's choices, progress, environment, and relationships is crucial to creating the life one dreams of.
It's not enough to go full steam ahead; you must know your objectives, which you can only understand with a measure of self-awareness.
Self-awareness also serves as feedback. I've spent too much time doing things I hated because I thought there was no other option. Looking back, I had a slew of choices if only I had been aware of my abilities and the people who would have been happy to help. But I was caught up in myself, so I didn't.
I'm doing my best to avoid repeating mistakes and sharing this so you don't.
Self-awareness helps you peel back the layers of who you are. When you reach that point, the lived knowledge of Self, and are secure in it, you will no longer need to seek security in places and things that disturb you.
Lessons
Ultimately, it comes down to how you approach challenges and failure — change that, and you will be set for the long term! Resilience, a growth mindset, and self-awareness are three essential tools for your toolbox, self-improvement, and life. When trials come your way, you have the means to tackle them.
The best part about this? Each tool can be cultivated and refined. You're not stuck going through your days with blinders on (if that is your choice, I support you). Dig deep and push through, and you'll get this.
Indeed, you'll get knocked down, but you'll get up again.
