The 3 C’s of Great Leadership
What makes a great leader? When hiring for managers on your team, what qualities do you look for? How do you decide who to promote as a manager on your team?
Meet the 3 C’s of Leadership.

Confidence
“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”―Theodore Roosevelt
Great leaders are confident — about their vision, their mission, their goals, their capabilities. They are go-getters, leading their teams to solve complex problems while providing them the support along the way. Great leaders are optimistic about the future. They are confident that they will be able to handle the challenges, complexities and threats that they are faced with.
As they say, communication is key, and great leaders are great communicators. They project confidence in every word they speak, in their body language, their tone. Their teams are always charged up and raring to go.
Competence
“True intuitive expertise is learned from prolonged experience with good feedback on mistakes.” — Daniel Kahneman
But confidence isn’t enough. In fact, it is only one ingredient of great leadership. Competence is the second key ingredient of great leadership.
Great bosses know what they’re talking about — they have the experience and the skills to deliver what is expected in their roles. They are experts in their field, and continue to build on that expertise. They know their customers and their needs, and have a strong customer mindset. They are technically oriented, and are able to roll up their sleeves when the need arises. They provide coaching and guidance to their teams, and help to up-level their expertise so they can be groomed as the next leaders.
Commitment
“Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” — Paul J. Meyer
If you ask me what skill is by far the most critical in a great leader (and for that matter, any individual)? I would say it is the commitment. I have come across countless leaders in large organizations who are always on the edge — they are not committed to the organization’s success, and are merely doing the 9–5 motions.
Great leaders are willing to put in their sweat in order to achieve the mission that they are on. They work hard, and also party hard. They hold themselves, their teams and other parties accountable, and continue to march towards the goals. They are a driving force for the organization.
Conclusion
All great leaders possess three key qualities that differentiate them from average leaders:
- They are confident, optimistic, driven
- They are competent, experts in their field, and know what they do
- They are committed, hard working, and accountable
