2022 Desertification and Drought Day coincides with problems and criticalities about the environment. Drought, in particular, is a global and urgent problem. It is among the most destructive natural disasters from the point of view of the loss of life.

Soil degradation and climate change, in fact, exacerbate drought. It is growing in frequency and severity, with 55 million people affected each year. According to estimates, drought could affect three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050.

“Recent drought phenomena denote a precarious future for the world. The shortage of food and water, as well as forest fires caused by severe drought, have all intensified”.

The United Nations recalled it. This year’s global Day Against Desertification and Drought takes place in Madrid. Spain is a country vulnerable to drought, water shortages, and related climatic phenomena.

“Drought is not only the absence of rain; it is often fueled by soil degradation and climate change. Together, we can overcome its devastating effects on people and nature. We can begin preparing now to build a future world that can withstand drought. “

Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, Vice President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge
