The 12 Things Intelligent People Don’t Do

Are you an intelligent person?

Photo from QuoteFancy

I love interacting with people and observing their behavior. And I like to study intelligent people and to adopt small parts of their mindset.

I’ve always wondered what intelligent people do and don’t do and struggled to figure it out.

I find intelligent people fascinating because they always manage to have solutions for every situation. They don’t have problems, because they handle situations before they become problems.

While it is very difficult to figure out the secrets of successful people, it is easier to observe what they don’t do.

Are you ready for the list of tips?

Successful people don’t waste the opportunity to save money

Saving money is a characteristic of smart and successful people. I have learned on the hard way that people don’t buy the things they need, but the things they want.

How to save money:

  • A good method for saving money is not to go shopping. I am serious! Stop laughing!!! I am also laughing reading this, haha. Buy only the things you need, only when you need them.
  • Buy clothing only when they are on a discount. You shouldn’t think you have enough T-shirts. Buy a few instead, if the price is good. This way, you won’t have to buy them when they will have bigger prices.
  • Split your monthly earnings into two parts. A part you save and a part you spend on paying taxes, buying food, and other small pleasures. Try not to take out money from your savings unless you have an emergency.

And a lovely and powerful quote:

Too many people spend money they earned..to buy things they don’t want..to impress people that they don’t like. — Will Rogers

Successful people don’t act irresponsibly

Responsible people are not boring people, that’s for sure. Successful people are always capable of doing what has to be done. And they don’t do stupid things very often.

They don’t take risky decisions that affect others. I think they are full of micro-habits that make them successful. They don’t procrastinate too much, they keep their promises, they work hard… things like this.

They don’t oversleep when they have important meetings they have to attend in the morning. They don’t drink and drive… they don’t […]

Do you get it? They don’t do stupid things!

Successful people don’t hesitate to learn from their mistakes

Mistakes are unavoidable. It is impossible to have all the situations under control because the human mind is not capable to judge all the angles possible. With the right mindset, a smart person can use difficult situations as learning lessons.

The mistakes are constant reminders that every situation can help us evolve and develop new skills. The problems appear when we are not capable of learning from past things.

I love making decisions and after each mistake, I try to analyze what went wrong, in order not to repeat the same thing.

When I feel bad about the things I’ve done, I read this quote:

“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” Oscar Wilde

Successful people don’t rely too much on others

The one thing I need to stop doing is relying too much on other people. I like trusting people, but blind faith in others sometimes stops me from doing things on my own.

Successful people know they don’t need others to have success. They don’t just wait for things to happen, they act instead. Entrusting others too much is usually a sign of weakness.

Why don’t you stop waiting and start doing? Forget others, you are good on your own!

Successful people don’t live in the past

We cannot change the past, but we shouldn’t let it define us either. We need to learn how to manage it and to stop it from affecting our present.

For example, I find it difficult sometimes to forgive things from the past, but this habit is sometimes very toxic. Instead, I should be happy all the past experiences transformed me into the person I am today.

Forget what happened in the past, focus on the present, and start building the future. I wish someone had given me this advice when I was younger.

Successful people don’t underestimate their skills and abilities

I hate it when people underestimate themselves.

Successful people are aware of the things they do well and the things they have to improve about themselves. Sometimes, it’s difficult to perform difficult tasks, but with a positive mindset, everything is possible.

Instead of constantly doubting yourself, you should focus on succeeding.

Being in difficulty is normal, why don’t you just enjoy the moment and struggle to do the best you can?

Successful people don’t neglect important things

They never neglect the vital aspects of their lives or their businesses. One of the key factors of success is to pay attention to details.

Don’t take things for granted and don’t be superficial. Nothing good comes from these two bad habits. Instead, never stop doing the work, to achieve the things you need.

I hate it when people don’t focus on the things that matter. Instead of managing situations, they just wait, only to have the occasion to complain afterward.

Successful people don’t rely on luck

A smart person told me once that there is 99% work and 1% luck in all the situations, and I tend to believe her.

Successful people work hard to obtain their things and consider that luck is just a bonus that can make things easier. They don’t rely on luck and don’t use luck as a life and business strategy.

There is that saying that luck only helps strong people and I tend to believe it. Instead of waiting for things to happen, successful people do things. They move the chess pieces on the table and generate constant changes with their actions.

Successful people don’t make enemies

Avoiding people we don’t get along with is very good advice.

Successful people don’t make enemies, ever. They find means to work and communicate with others, even if they don’t get along too well. Good soft skills help people get along easier with others. Competitive people usually are hard to get along with, but with the proper set of skills, things are not so difficult.

I love the “keep your friends closer and your enemies even closer” quote. I think I’ve learned this from Spider-Man when I was just a kid.

Successful people don’t make decisions driven by ego

I think that a big ego is required for success, but that should not cloud our decisions.

People are usually too proud and this makes them make bad decisions. If used well, pride is the element that keeps us continue in difficult moments. It should not stop us from doing the right things, even if it hurts sometimes.

Successful people are capable of changing their minds

They are very open to change their opinions if they consider they need to. The inability to change your mind is always a thing that sabotages your evolution.

Successful people are constantly reevaluating situations and adjust. In a fast-paced society, taking fast decisions is the key to success. Don’t be afraid of changing anything, if the situation requires it.

Successful people don’t drop their ideas just to please others

Dropping your ideas to please others is a change of weakness. Successful people always stick to the things they believe in.

They don’t take no for an answer and never get discouraged by other people’s opinions.

I have such a big ego, I never quit doing the things I believe in, despite the number of different opinions I receive. And you should do the same!

This being said, I will finish the article with this awesome quote from Winston Churchill:

“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”
