The 12 Core Business Skills To Master According To Chet Holmes
Insights from the classic “The Ultimate Sales Machine”
The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes is one of the most practical business books ever written.
It was instrumental in how I built my coaching business and one of the best books I read in 2022. In the book, Holmes presents a compelling framework based on mastering 12 core skills that can elevate a company from average to exceptional. These skills, ranging from time management to accountability, are not just theoretical concepts but practical tools that have proven their worth in the business world. I attempt to offer a concise yet insightful exploration of how they can transform your business and daily practices. By integrating these skills into daily operations, businesses can enhance their productivity, efficiency, and ultimately, their success.
Whether you are an entrepreneur or a seasoned organizational leader, these skills are invaluable tools in your quest for business mastery.
Like I mentioned in my one-sentence description for all the books I read in 2022, don’t practice 4,000 business skills, practice these 12 skills 4,000 times.
1. Time Management
Effective time management is the cornerstone of productivity. Holmes emphasizes the need for meticulous organization and prioritization. By focusing on tasks that yield the highest return and minimizing distractions, businesses can achieve more in less time. His ideas on time management are practical, as we tend to waste time on busy work like email, avoiding the real work that moves the needle in our business (i.e. sales).
If you touch it, take action.
“If you touch it, take action. That’s the first step to great time management. Don’t open that email or letter until you’re ready to deal with it.” — Chet Holmes
2. Instituting Higher Standards and Regular Training
Setting high standards and investing in regular training are key to fostering a culture of excellence. Holmes suggests that continuous learning and skill enhancement lead to a more competent and confident workforce.
“Schedule workshops for the next year and put them on the company calendar as nonnegotiable requirements of everyone’s job. Start them this week.” — Chet Holmes
3. Effective Meetings
Holmes highlights the importance of purposeful and concise meetings. Effective meetings should have clear objectives and a focused agenda, ensuring that every gathering translates into productive outcomes. He cites a case where a company reduced meeting times by half, yet doubled its effectiveness by adhering to a strict agenda.
4. Becoming a Brilliant Strategist
Developing strategic acumen is vital for navigating the competitive business landscape. Holmes advises on understanding market dynamics and identifying unique opportunities.
5. Hiring Superstars
The caliber of your team can make or break your business. Holmes stresses the importance of recruiting top-tier talent who are not just skilled but also align with the company’s vision. He recounts how hiring a high-performing salesperson significantly increased a company’s overall performance. That is the kind of impact a single person can make.
“I’ve found that it takes about 8.4 rejections to get a meeting. And what makes the difference between people who will face that rejection one time and quit or 40 times and never quit is determined purely by the strength of their ego.” — Chet Holmes
6. Sales Skills
Mastering sales skills is fundamental to driving business growth. Holmes covers various aspects of sales, from understanding customer needs to effective closing techniques.
“You will attract way more buyers if you are offering to teach them something of value to them than you will ever attract by simply trying to sell them your product or ser vice.” — Chet Holmes
7. Marketing and Advertising
Effective marketing and advertising are crucial for attracting and retaining customers. Holmes discusses crafting compelling messages that resonate with the target audience and using information-based marketing.
You want to educate your potential customers and get them to drive traffic to your products organically based on the information you are providing.
“Get this: if you offer all this advice and plug that Web site every where you’re already promoting your product, the site becomes an information source that folks are going to send other folks to in order to get this information. So information-based marketing accelerates your reach and increases word-of-mouth” — Chet Holmes
8. Client Follow-Up
Holmes underscores the importance of consistent client follow-up. Effective follow-ups can enhance customer satisfaction, leading to repeat business and referrals. The book shares how a structured follow-up system resulted in increased customer loyalty for a service-based business.
Following up is the key to success with sales and it takes several follow-ups to produce even a single meeting.
Most people will follow up only once, yet the most accomplished salespeople routinely say that you have to follow up many, many more times.
9. Getting the Best Buyers
Identifying and attracting the best buyers is a skill that can significantly impact profitability. Holmes advises on strategies to pinpoint and appeal to ideal customers. An anecdote in the book reveals how a focused marketing effort toward high-value clients led to higher profits.
10. The Art of Getting Referrals
Referrals are a powerful tool for business growth. Holmes illustrates the importance of creating strategies that encourage customers to refer new clients.
11. Goal Setting and Planning
Setting clear goals and meticulous planning are essential for steering a business toward success. Holmes emphasizes the need for realistic and measurable goals accompanied by detailed action plans.
Goal-setting is a multifaceted process that is much more complicated than SMART gurus would have you believe. Subscribe here to get a notification when I publish Ultimate Goal Setting Guide for 2024 and Beyond.
12. Accountability
Lastly, Holmes discusses the importance of accountability within an organization. Ensuring that team members are responsible for their results fosters a sense of ownership and commitment.
“Implementation, not ideas, is the key to real success.” — Chet Holmes
