The 100% Read To View Ratio
Unraveling the mystery

I know. There are a ton of articles on medium about read/view ratios, what they mean, and how to get to the 100% mountain top.
I’m not really the guy you should pay attention to on this subject what with the number of people reading me is decidedly insignificant. But I have published a couple of hundred stories here — and I do study my stats thoroughly. So maybe my opinion does matter even if I’m not a superstar on this platform.
Predictably, I have some 100%ers — and some real stinkers as well. And I’ve come to realize that the ratio of views to reads has little to do with the quality of my writing — and more to do with the length of the article and especially, the subject.
Medium readers are saturated with suggestions. And unless what you’ve written is incredibly compelling, I wouldn’t expect the majority of readers to complete a 20-minute story. So even if your long pieces are brilliant, they won't have as high a ratio as the shorter ones.
The subject matter is key. I’ve written a lot about my prison experience with millions of views on Quora — and tumbleweed here. Some of the pieces contain my best work (just my opinion). They also have some of my worst read/view ratios. The takeaway? Medium readers don’t give a shit about prison. Quora readers do.
The flip side of the coin is my 100%ers. One is about racism in the escort community. Another describes a pimp’s life and bachelor party hijinks all rolled into one. A third is a piece of erotica. Even though Medium is a lot about technology and self-improvement, its readers have a healthy interest in sex.
Another interesting trend in the stats is the popularity of any article I write which addresses how to succeed on this platform. Want a great ratio? Write something about how to up your followers on this site or any other social medium. Guaranteed winner when it comes to read/view ratio. Everybody wants to know how to succeed on Medium. Very few do — at least monetarily.
The bottom line is this: If you want a high read-through ratio, write about what the average Medium reader wants to read. And don’t make it too long. Sometimes, I’m convinced the quality of your work is secondary. Give the people what they want. It’s really pretty simple.
