The 1 Thing You Fear The Most

And how to switch your thinking so you can become a confident action taker

Why do you fear action? What stops you from pressing go?

The fear is a block. Deep within your mind. A block that cancels out anything good that can happen in your life.

This block is just a thought. It feels like more. Like there’s something wrong with you. No matter what you do, still, things just don’t go your way.

Procrastination, overthinking decisions, and the worst of all… idea flipping. You go from one thing to the next because the last idea wasn’t quite right. You weren’t qualified enough, experienced enough, or dare I say good enough.

The truth is, you fear judgement. You fear rejection. You fear standing out. But what is there to fear? So what if someone judges you? So what if you get rejected? So what if people notice you’re trying to improve your life?

I spoke to a guy yesterday, let’s call him Gerry, who fears the gym. Gerry is overweight, and a gym is a foreign place. He’s afraid people will ridicule or laugh at him. What if he does something wrong? What if people judge the fat guy in the gym?

This happened to a friend of mine a while back. My friend is overweight. So she put on a brave face and joined a local gym. Scared as hell all she could think about was people pointing and laughing. She was petrified. But she made it. She got through the doors and signed up. All was good until it wasn’t.

A few weeks into her new routine she crossed paths with a bunch of young lads. She didn’t think too much of it. After all, everyone she met so far had been really nice and supportive. Some were giving her advice and applauding her commitment. She had even made a few new friends.

These guys, not so much. They crowded together and ridiculed her. Laughed at the fat girl in the gym. All her biggest fears became real. She walked out crying and never went back.

This was a painful and traumatic experience for my friend. Even now, years later she’s too afraid to go back. The bullies won. The small minority of losers had gotten under her skin and stopped her from doing the work.

The truth is, you can’t avoid the haters. You can’t avoid people pointing and laughing. The difference is the meaning you give to it.

Think of it this way.

My friend was in the gym trying to better herself. It’s the reason we go to the gym. To improve our strength, endurance and fitness. To help us become fitter, healthier, and happier. More confident in our own skin.

The majority of people supported my friend. They encouraged her and gave her advice. Why? Because they too are on the same journey. They too had to start somewhere. They too had the fears and anxieties of not knowing.

These guys figured it out. They got results. Most likely failed many times in the process but eventually, they figured it out. That’s why they wanted to support my friend. To share their findings and help her up the ladder. They were empathetic. The highest form of human connection.

The losers?

Well, these guys are the minority. Struggling to get any results of their own, it makes them feel better by pulling others down. The thought of someone overtaking their half-arsed efforts sends fear into their souls.

The losers have given up. The work was too much effort. They can’t take failure. It hurts their ego. So instead, they inflate their ego by hurting others. Pointing out their flaws and insecurities and latching on to them like an out-of-control Pitbull.

This short-term ego-stroking gifts them a second of relief. Momentarily they are removed from their own pain. It’s what losers do. Their joy is in watching others fail. And if they can be part of that failure, even better. Because then they have contributed.

I get why you fear judgement. Because like it or not it’s there. The only way to avoid it is to do nothing and be nothing.

To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing — Aristotle

Remember this.

Anyone who has the time to judge, or hate isn’t doing as well as you. Their ego has been hit and they are hurting. Hurt people, hurt people. And believe it or not, this is the minority.

The majority want to help. They want you to succeed. So don’t give your energy to the minority. Instead, meet them with empathy and understand it’s nothing personal. It’s their problem, not yours.

P.S.

Keep being awesome!
