That’s Nice

When two words say it all

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

“That’s nice.” A casual comment A gratuitous observance A placating platitude An affirmation to continue A safe road to tread

“That’s nice.” Two nondescript words uncommitted fence-sitters bland like vanilla icecream but for these bonded soul-partners they’re a smorgasbord of every cuisine

“That’s nice.” A gift of gratitude A sarcastic jab A please don’t disturb A rub up the wrong way A pause for thought

“That’s nice.” One says to the other with a knowing look in their eye that only the other understands leaving no reason to ask why coz the two words say it all.

“That’s nice.” A soother of nerves An emergency beacon An insult gob-stopper A flag of tolerance A room for improvement

“That’s nice.” An encoded language of endless shades of meaning that these two melded spirits know how to decipher with uncanny accuracy

“That’s nice.” A linguistic chameleon A message in a bottle A telepathic connector An anchor in the sea A drawbridge to home

“That’s nice.” imbued with emotion inflected by voice accented with gesture carried on spirit wings delivered safely in trust

I was ‘inspired’ to write this poem as soon as I read Simran’s weekly prompt topic: language and spirituality. It wasn’t my reaction to the theme words themselves, although being a speech pathologist, language instantly grabbed my attention; it was my recollection of how a friend and her husband used the simple declarative, That’s nice, to communicate so much more than the superficial semantics. For them, those two words were the equivalent of a two-minute conversation. They knew each other so well — they were bonded so closely in spirit — that they could read each other like they were in each other’s skin. It was magic watching them interact and how they conveyed so much without the need for words even though they both loved to talk!

I say I was inspired to write this piece but I think instructed is a more accurate word. You may have noticed that I speak of my friend and her husband in past tense. That’s because only one of them is alive today. My friend passed away two years ago next week — on Australia Day — to be precise. I say friend but she was so much more than that. She was — is — my soul sister. And now she is my heavenly muse. Her name is Lynda. I’ve written about her here and here.

I know Lynda wanted me to share her That’s nice story with you but she didn’t tell me how she wanted me to write it. She left it to me to figure it out for myself. Thanks for that, Lynda!! I think she has more confidence in my skills to scratch out a poem than I do! I only hope I have managed to eek out a modicum of worthiness with my words.

Thank you to Simran Kankas for including me as a writer for Spiritual Tree. I’m looking forward to engaging with the beautiful community of readers and writers here.
