That’s a Great Idea!
Sage Advice on Medium Publications

Let’s get straight to the point. Publications are all the rage here on Medium. One might be invited to write for a pub, or throw your hat in the ring when a publication you think you fit with puts out their “Write For Us” notice.
This week I read some of the best advice on the subject of Medium publications in a great article by Derek Hughes. He said,
You won’t go viral by getting into the right publication. So don’t waste endless energy on this. Find 4 publications that’ll quickly publish your stuff. Rotate your submissions around them. And focus on writing content. It’s more important to publish regularly. And focus on what readers want.
The whole article is useful and instructive for writers seeking to make money on Medium, so be sure to check it out, but the part about picking 4 pubs that will QUICKLY publish your work is key! It resonated so much with me that I took a good hard look at the publications on my roster. There were 20 of them!!! Three of which were my own attempts at creating pubs, that I have sorely neglected. Too much!

I have now begun the process of purging. I’ve deleted two of my three personal publications, and I have removed myself from publications where I have not made any contribution in over a year, or where I’m not sensing a great fit. Outside of my 1 personal pub, (which is on teaching and I may come back to it), my list of pubs I contribute to as a writer will be whittled down to 4 or 5.
Amongst my faves are Bouncin’ and Behavin’ Blogs, Short.Sweet.Valuable, Long.Sweet.Valuable, REAL, and Maturity. These publications have been my tribe, especially BBB. (Shout out to the Professor of Medium, Jason Provencio!) He is responsible for encouraging my early Medium days and giving me my first ever boosted story. Honorable mentions that have me on pause are The Social Justice Tribune and The Business Inside, but only because I have not submitted anything to them. I have stuff to say for each, but haven’t been writing as much in these areas. Not their fault.

All of this to say, Derek’s advice was a foghorn wake-up call for me. It reminded me to be intentional about my focus. To contribute and bloom where I am best suited. Bonus for me is that my top 4 pubs are all pretty great about publishing work quickly. No allowing my submissions to languish for days or weeks on end. I’ve even learned that sometimes, you can simply publish your work sans publication if you’re simply trying to maintain a posting rhythm.
Anyways, I hope this helps you as much as it helped me. Focus and be intentional about your writing here on Medium and beyond. Cream always rises to the top, so keep working and improving, intentionally.
