POETRY ON MEDIUM

That We May Receive

In the spirit of addressing fear

Photo by leah hetteberg on Unsplash

last Christmas, I gave my mother a watercolor horse.

she’d shown me plants galore and yes, horses, that she’s painted.

but whenever I asked her to paint with me,

she laid down excuses like cement.

children. no time. etc.

underneath that cement was fear.

by some modicum of grace, her face lit up when she saw the horse, and she used words and emotions as gratitude currency.

she placed the horse painting at the typewriter in the dining room where everyone could ponder it.

I suppose the lesson is that watercolor horses never run

out of style or that fear can be addressed politely.

that love can give and multiply despite a world still enamored with zero-sum-games.
