That Still, Small Voice

A Poetic Response to the Sky Collection Prompt: Silence

Photo by Julia Weihe on Unsplash

Be still and know that I am God, He said. Be still and know that I am, You said. Be still and know, I thought. Be still, He said. Be!

Based on Psalm 46:10

Silence is truly golden. In the summer I love to sit on a downed tree that dips into a river near here. I sit quietly and listen. I watch the water flow lazily in the backwater stream below. I hear the birds. I’ve seen deer come to drink and a badger swim across, eye me, and wander off.

If you sit still, you blend into nature, become part of all that is. Isn’t that the way it is supposed to be — not separate from but a living part of Creation?

When we center ourselves and quiet our minds we can hear the essence of our being. We hear our breath and the buzzing of silence in our ears; we smell the fresh air. We know that we are alive and begin to appreciate what that means. We make the connection with Nature. With practice, we can become one with it, and thereby one with our Creator and all of Creation.

I’m reminded of the Simon and Garfunkel song, one of my long-time favorites:

This poem was inspired by Samantha Lazar’s prompt to write something about “Silence.” If you’d like to participate, the instructions are:
