Summary
The article reflects on the profound impact of the "American Beauty" plastic bag scene, emphasizing the importance of recognizing life's simple yet beautiful moments and the personal growth that can come from revisiting meaningful art.
Abstract
The author recounts their experience of rediscovering the iconic plastic bag scene from "American Beauty" on YouTube, which evoked unexpected emotions and insights. This scene, where a floating plastic bag is poetically described as a symbol of life's hidden beauty and a reminder to embrace moments of serenity, resonates deeply with the author. They relate it to their own understanding of beauty in the mundane, such as watching traffic or a sleeping child. The article suggests that beauty is subjective and that everyone has the capacity to find their own moments of peace and beauty in the world, often in the most unexpected places. It also touches on the balance of beauty and ugliness within individuals and the importance of accepting love and criticism equally, as both contribute to personal growth. The author encourages readers to seek depth in their experiences and relationships rather than chasing universal approval, and to hold onto the moments that bring true joy and fulfillment.
Opinions

I saw the movie “American Beauty” 12 years ago. Recently I came across the shopping bag scene on YouTube. YouTube has been recommending movies from my memories lately.
Looks like they have immensely upgraded their algorithm as they know what’s down my memory lane or so I think.
Oddly, the scene gave me feelings that I didn’t feel 12 years ago. Sometimes, you understand or live the story way after you have seen a movie or read a book. Lines like these:
“It was one of those days when it’s a minute away from snowing. And there’s this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it, right? And this bag was just… dancing with me … like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. That’s the day I realized that there was this entire life behind things and this incredibly benevolent force that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid. Ever. Video is a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember … I need to remember…”
There is a complete novel in these lines. A lifetime of experiences and emotions. I have described earlier in my article how watching the traffic from a tall building is oddly satisfying. Similarly, I am not alone who finds the dancing shopping bag mysteriously deeply relaxing and soothing.
This video along with the quoted lines I shared above are together one of the most powerful scenes one can recommend for a positive mindset.
There is always love and care in the world. We all come across similar scenes without realizing and recognizing. These rarest and priceless moments are not big achievements but little tender moments. Your kid sleeping in your lap, having tea/coffee with your partner, watching the rain from your window from a warm cozy room in winter.
The great thing about it is that everyone can have their own moments of relaxation. One scene which is ordinary to others may be precious for some. But we all do feel when that moment arrives. We love every bit of it.
We can relive that moment even by imagining. When I was young I thought the scene was weird and it would take some serious artistic sense to appreciate it. Now, seeing it with fresh eyes makes it all the more clearer.
Beauty is at the most unexpected places. It can be found in the most ordinary-looking people. When we say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder it exactly means that one can see splendour where others might not.
The world is created in balance this way. Everyone is beautiful and ugly at the same time. We have balance in ourselves. No one is gorgeous or despicable. We all are both. That’s the way it is and that’s the way it should be.
Don’t you think if someone was just plain old stunning and someone might just be ugly? How would that make these two people feel? The former would be swimming in appreciation, envy, and self-praise, while the latter would become pitiful and find it hard to find any love in this world. Both would grow bore after some time. Yes, too much praise and attention can also cause a person to become depressed as well.
We are all loved by some and hated by some. It’s a blessing. It keeps us upright and sane. We can see our faults and get nurtured by love at the same time.
Similarly, this plastic bag scene. It doesn’t have to be liked by all and it doesn’t’. Some people think it is just plain crazy and stupid and some, like me, think it is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.
This dancing plastic bag teaches us a lesson. Don’t look for universal approval and appreciation. Love is measured by its depth, not by multiples of occurrences. One deep fulfilling conversation is better than many useless, emotionless chit chats. One satisfying, gratifying relationship is better than many on the surface, on the go acquaintances or friends.
Don’t go out looking for love and appreciation from all. As I said, everyone has their beauty and demons. Love the people who see the beauty in you and don’t hate the people who see the devil in you. It’s not their fault. We all have a devil inside each of us and someone is bound to discover it.
Life is not perfect and that’s the beauty. If it would be so perfect everyone would love the same things and everyone would hate the same things as well. So how people who would be hated by all could survive.
Remember, there is always someone who appreciates you, there always will be. And if you think you hate everyone then you are wrong. You can always find someone to love.

The beauty of this life which is shown in this scene is that all of us can find beauty in it, but different beauties. It’s not about understanding it, it’s about feeling it, feeling it in your own way. That’s life, we can even find beauty in a bag if we want, and it’s beautiful.
One comment on this scene by Irene Hatch goes like this
” I feel like nothing really matters, we rush around on pointless tasks at times, and put more importance on things that aren’t that important in the great scheme of life, we are like this bag rushing, drifting, not stopping to think and look around us”.
Another commentator bananatoon banini says
“The bag is not offering resistance to the wind… watch the way they dance together, it’s beautiful”.
But this comment by Dilly Dangers summed it up for me,
“It is so sad, that we as a society have lost our sense of wonder. When I was a child, the smallest things were inherently beautiful. The littlest thing would grab my interest and hold it. Beauty was everywhere. Now I have grown cold and jaded. This video helps me to remember. I need to remember.”
You all will have to find the meaning of this dance of bag by yourself. We all have something to remember which reminds us of love and beauty in this world.
We all need to remember.
