That Night in Your Car

A poem about a breakup

Photo by Charles Postiaux on Unsplash

That night in your car carried an air of unfamiliarity, A subtle change in the atmosphere unlike days of the past. Maybe it was the way the seat had been adjusted, Or how the air conditioning seemed colder than usual. Words stood on the edge of the precipice of your throat, Almost as if they were trembling in anticipation, While waiting for the radio advertisement to pass.

The jingles stopped, replaced by my favourite song. As the first chords of the first verse began, Your words came slow and calm like an acoustic guitar. You talked about how we connected, And how much you wanted me in your life, You wanted to put a label on us. I could hardly breathe, everything was in a whirl.

The catchy chorus of the song began, There was a shift in the rhythm of your voice, Your words free flowed like an eighties synth, Which slowly made sense as I blinked away my tears. Words about how we came from different worlds, That it would never be like in the love songs, I would never fit in with your social circle.

The second verse of the song came in, Deep melancholy echoed the state of my emotions, You said that despite everything you had told me, Of how much you wanted me a minute and a half ago, There would be no foreseeable future for us. Surely I must have expected it to end this way. After all, you had cautioned me right from the start.

But you were wrong that night in your car, While it was true I had no expectations, All common sense left me when you confessed. You gave me hope, only to take it all away, And so, before the song ended, even before the bridge, Before the mark of four minutes fifty seconds, You broke my heart because I let you.

Have you ever dated someone casually and when you think they are going to make it official (right after an intense period of love-bombing), they break up with you instead? To make it worse, sometimes you might not even have feelings for them initially, but they are the ones who pursue and love-bomb you first by constantly showering you with gifts, attention and over-the-top declarations of love. This makes you fall in love with them inevitably, and when that happens, they do a one-eighty and decide not to see you again. It seems like their only intention is to make you fall in love with them, just so they can break your heart. I am not an expert in psychology, but it seems quite likely that such behaviour aligns with the traits commonly associated with narcissists. Let’s hear your thoughts on this.
