Time to plan an exit strategy

Two things. First, please read what she said in her most recent Medium article which kindly, we ALL need to read if we are writers. See:

I have written about this a lot, and I did again yesterday. Medium has been diseased and dying for a long time. One of the gifts Marley gave us in case you missed it was this:

For those of us utterly and completely FED UP with Ev Williams and what he did not only to his own staff but especially to us, none of this comes as a surprise. However. I was right when I repeatedly pointed out over the last many months that Medium had to be toxic if for no other reason than the turnover rate. Turnover rate is one of THE prime indications of a sickness within.

Yep.

From her article, and I, wholeheartedly concur:

Only the strongest, smartest, most nimble of us will survive. A dog knows when it isn’t wanted and not liked. So do people. Follow me. My links are in my profile. Explore my new spaces. Technology is forever changing and evolving. We have no control over it. We can only control what belongs to us. I’m taking control. I hope you’ll decide to come along for the ride. I’m still working on a few things, but for the most part, it’s presentable to entertain company.

Bottom line. Several buddies of mine whom I met in this space, and a cadre of Black female writers have all migrated steadily outta here. If you are a writer I would download my entire Medium story cache NOW before something happens to it. I am going to. Any keen observer has been watching this shit show for a long time and it kept worsening, like that ship in the Suez.

In fact, that’s an apt analogy, come to think of it. An itty bitty tiny earth mover next to a mountain of steel and goods that isn’t fucking moving and is holding up a whole lotta folks’ progress.

In a nutshell.

For Linda Caroll who wrote intelligently about this the other day, look. I trust Ev with nothing. The article speaks to why. Whatever happens next is likely to mean that Medium is going to be sold or broken up or whatever, but I do NOT expect, nor should any of us, a return to the kind of kindness and community we loved not that long ago. Not for all, but enough so that it felt worth fighting for.

Not now.

Get your stories out. If you really are a pro, plan your exit. Get ready. The last thing I want is to be last out the door without a parachute. Make sure you have somewhere to land, and that those who like you can find you.

Like MarleyK is doing. And I can’t speak for anyone else but I’ve noticed when smart Black women speak up, it’s usually smart to pay attention.

And I am attending.

And BTW to all those newbies to Medium who last year accused me of being sour apples and that I wasn’t willing to change with the system, I have rarely enjoyed writing these words more:

I told you so. And I was right.

So’s MarleyK. I’m with her.

And if you’re with me you can find me over at walkaboutsaga dot com, where I am building my new home. Stay tuned.
