Thankful For My Daughter
Today is her birthday
Today is my baby’s birthday!
She is seventeen!
Seventeen years ago I received a wonderful blessing.
Today I am feeling so blessed and thankful.
A young woman on the cusp of becoming herself.
She continues to take steps that will carry her further from the security of my arms.
I stand in her wake in tears, prayers, and thanksgiving.
Thankful
I am thankful for the gift of my daughter.
When I found out I was having a girl, I was so so happy.
As I stood outside with this tiny life safely secured in her car seat, an older lady walked by and took a peek. She said to be “brand new huh”, yes I replied brand new.
Her brand new spirit often looked at me with such serious and knowing eyes, it felt like she was privy to my thoughts.
Firsts
In the first year of her life, we traveled a lot.
She was the perfect traveling companion.
And I wouldn’t trade those times for the world.
She was an early walker, she quit wetting the bed by age two completely on her own.
She has always been such a self-starter and motivator.
Though her bedroom — remains a sore point.
She has been a brilliant student since pre-K.
Self-sufficient and poised.
In all things academic, she has been outstanding.
She wants to be a psychologist as she finds joy in helping others.
Soon I will let her behind the wheel of her own car ….😨
Then off to college.
Prayers
For this child, I have prayed.
My first child is a boy and I so so wanted a girl.
I was so happy when the sonogram confirmed that it was indeed a girl.
Closing thoughts
My time as the mother is drawing to a close.
My role will be slightly reversed, I will become more of a “consultant”.
I pray I have taught her all that she needs as an individual and that she will forever be assured that I will be there for her.
I hope she internalized the values we have imparted as she creates her path in the jungle of this world.
My thanks, love, and my prayers go with her always.
I will be forever grateful that God chose me to be her mother and continue to do my best to be worthy of the title.
Happy birthday to the best daughter a mother could ask for.
Fly free, the world is yours to discover, and may you always remember to come back home.
