Thank Goodness For Electricity

How can we get along without it?

There are so many things that depend on electricity.

Our electricity went out the other night. It happens fairly frequently that the power will go off for a short while, but this is the first time it has happened at night while we have lived in this location. It had already gotten dark so we lit a candle and got flashlights ready to use.

I was going to be picking up my daughter from the airport in about half an hour so it was necessary to get the car out of the garage. It meant using the flashlight to see where the rope was that had to be pulled to release the garage door. Then the door had to be lifted manually. That was how it was generally done before garage door openers became the norm. Young people may not remember those days.

Electricity is necessary for the garage door openers to work. It is essential for many things we use in our daily lives, including cell phones.

The news had reported that New Orleans had been without power for a week due to the ravages of the Hurricane Ida. Those who did not have access to generators may have been without electricity for days. Their phones likely ran out of battery and would not work.

How can we live without electricity? We are dependent on it for so much of life, not the least of these being to light up the night and darkness.

When I went to the airport to pick up my daughter, I was able to charge up my phone in the car. I had a portable charger which I could use later. That would not have lasted if our electricity had been out for an extended period of time. The computer may have worked for a while on the charge that had been available, but that would have run out. The internet did not work without electricity. Even the landline phone was dependent on electricity for use.

An email received from the power company (which we did not see until the next morning) stated that they were working to restore power. It said that power should be back on in about five hours. Another email which was also received the next morning indicated that the power had been restored. The outage actually lasted about two hours.

Modern conveniences and technology are so important to life as we know it. We have become accustomed to having these means of making our life easier. They help us in so many aspects of our daily lives. Our phones have become almost an extension of our arms in many cases. People use them all through the day and night for messages, social media, and entertainment.

We should be extremely grateful that we have electricity and all the other inventions which make our lives run smoothly. Life would be difficult without them.
