Why I Won’t Be Able to Watch ‘Tenet’ in the Big Screen
Dark days for filmmakers and movie lovers, as the industry faces the worst ever challenge in decades
Say what you may, but ‘Avatar’ film was a visual treat. It is that kind of movie which deserves to be watched on a big screen. While we need small budget movies that focus more on content, we also need big-budget movies once in a while. It is double the fun when big-budget meets a strong storyline. Imagine if Stanley Kubrick is alive to make ‘2020: A Space Odyssey’ on a large scale, with the most advanced technology.
I love watching movies on OTT platforms as well. I love the comfort of my sofa, and also the fact that I don’t have to spend a fortune on pop-corn and coke. But what kind of movies would I choose? I would not choose a movie like ‘Avatar’. I don’t have a home theatre, all I have is a 32-inch flat-screen. I would probably watch ‘Little Miss Sunshine’.
Forget about big-budget movies. What incentives do the filmmakers have to make films with the same dedication as before? What if they compromise on sound engineering? What if they compromise on lighting? What if they make inferior movies for the OTT platforms?
The biggest of all the problems is, “What if they continue the trend?”. I am worried that we will fall into a pit, deep enough that it would take a revolution in the industry to revive quality cinema again. But what would it cost us? Not sure.
Other factors are also making things worse for movie lovers. For example, Netflix has reduced picture quality as a result of the pandemic situation. Not just Netflix but even Amazon Prime reduced the picture quality.
While all of these moves seem like unavoidable ones, I feel that the authorities are not doing enough to come up with viable alternatives. Since most of us are staying indoors, the things that keep us sane are digital entertainment, books, pets, games, and other indoor hobbies. The part the Digital plays in all of these is very crucial, and within Digital the part the movies and series play are even more crucial.
I am positive that the government can do a lot to revive the movie industry. Especially, when they are opening other public services with restrictions, why cannot they make cinemas also accessible with reasonable restrictions? It is better than nothing right?
I am glad that at least in the US, the theatres are opening. AMC, the world’s largest cineplex operator, announced that it will open almost all the locations in the US and Britain by July.
There are a lot of challenges to this of course. For one, the intersection of movie lovers and anti-mask protestors is going to a big issue. We cannot have irresponsible people roaming about the cinema halls without masks, sabotaging the health and lives of others. There should be a proper mechanism to maintain the safety of the staff and the public.
On top of all these hurdles, there is something else that is like concrete clout to the head. Because of the pandemic situation, the forecasts of energy companies have gone haywire. Also, the skeletal staff is making it difficult for the electricity boards to address all the issues related to power. I, for instance, face at least 10–15 powercuts a single day! It is messing up with my personal and professional life. The network providers are also at their worst performance that I have seen of them, with me having to make at least 3–4 phonecalls to the helpdesk to get my network issues resolved!
‘Tenet’ is one of the films that I have been waiting to watch on the big screen. Now that I am almost 99% sure that I won’t be able to, it makes me very sad. I live in India, and the situation here is getting worse each day. The government has no plans at all, to open the theatres any time soon. While I see people roaming around the supermarkets, clinics, bookstalls, and public parks, I do not understand the indifference shown towards the movie industry. It is appalling.
Things are difficult for everyone. I don’t recall a similar instance where the producers and consumers were so vulnerable alike. When I call the helpdesk, I don’t even feel like stressing my voice to raise my concerns, because I know it won’t make any difference.
Let’s hope that we will cross this period a lot sooner than we think. I dream of that day when I can watch the latest movie of my favourite director on the big screen, and who knows, it could even be a movie about the pandemic that we just survived!
