Ten Thrilling Questions for the Travelers and Writers Out There

Another fun writing prompt…

① What’s the most fun thing you’ve done on a trip?

Anything involving hiking and being out in nature, especially the mountains. I’m having a hard time choosing between hiking in the Scottish Highlands, England’s Lake District, and The Grand Tetons in Wyoming.

I also found exploring the lava tubes in the Canary Islands to be really unique and fun (photo above is from Lanzarote, though obviously just the beach and not inside the lava tubes — if you’re interested in seeing photos and reading about that, you can do so here).

Another slightly weird thing that comes to mind is going to a maple candy store in Vermont. It smelled so ridiculously good inside. I might write a separate article about that actually…

② Where would you go again?

I know this is a bit of a cop-out, but everywhere. I don’t think I’ve ever gone somewhere that I thought, “Oh, I’d never go here again.” Maybe I’ll have that experience someday, but hopefully not.

③ What’s the best way to pass the time at an airport?

Reading a book. Sometimes I work on my laptop, but I really prefer to read.

④ Do you prefer an Air BNB, Hotel, or Hostel?

A hotel, when I can afford it. I like to have a private space to unwind at the end of the day. I’ve stayed in all three though, and they all have their pros and cons.

⑤ Do you prefer to bring suitcases or use a backpack?

Okay, this one is an easy one. Backpack, hands down. I’m a big fan of packing as little as humanly possible, because I hate hauling heavy luggage around.

⑥ Do you like to travel alone or with a group?

Usually alone. I really enjoy solo travel. That being said, I’ve had some amazing trips with friends and family too, and if the right people are available to travel with, I’ll gladly do that as well. Not big groups, though — four people max. Otherwise, there’s inevitably too much disagreement about what things to do and see.

⑦ Do you like to follow a planned itinerary or just do whatever you want when you get to your destination?

A combination of both. I do a decent amount of planning ahead of time, but I usually allow a day just to explore and see what I happen upon. Sometimes the things I find most interesting aren’t in the travel guides, and they’re only discoverable through aimless wandering.

⑧ What is the weirdest thing you pack with you?

Well, like I said, I try to pack as little as I can, so that doesn’t leave much room for weird items. I guess I’ll say aloe vera and coconut oil. Both are great for skin ailments, which unfortunately I am rather prone to (my skin seems to be allergic to everything at the moment).

⑨ What’s the worst trip you’ve ever had?

I wouldn’t say that I’ve had a bad trip overall, but I’ve had individual experiences on trips that have been bad. One that comes to mind is when I was in Seattle and walking downtown, a crazy guy started following me and screaming at me about how terrible Amazon was, despite the fact that I had nothing to do with Amazon. It took about fifteen minutes of me ignoring him and walking as quickly as I could for him to go away. The rest of my time in Seattle was fun, though.

①⓪ Favorite travel app?

I don’t actually think I have one! Is that bad? I’m not much of an app person in general.

I was inspired to write this thanks to Scott-Ryan Abt and Brad Yonaka. Be sure to check out their answers as well!
