Ten Reasons Not to Quit Online Writing (When You Want to)

Even though it’s like hacking your way through a jungle

Online writing is like being in the middle of a school of plankton. It is confusing, overwhelming, and you know that you have to separate yourself from the pack and not get swallowed by the whale of irrelevance.

I feel like I am processing endless bits of computer code and trying to come out with a coherent program.

Every time I sit down to write I am tempted to take my eyes off the road and glance at articles that tell me how to make $5k a month in a few short steps or that I need to make an email list. It goes on and on.

That’s why I wrote an article about how medium is the ultimate capitalistic endeavor.

It’s a fact of life. And that’s ok — some will be more successful than others. Some may just be doing this as a side gig, for fun. You may enjoy your day job and this is just the cherry on top. You write when you have a spare moment and that’s it. Hopefully, that provides the itch to your creative scratch.

Without further ado, here is what I have learned on medium so far:

  1. It has been a continuous process of trial and error, what works, what doesn’t. It’s frustrating and fun, all at the same time. It is getting a little less overwhelming.
  2. It is super popular to write about writing on Medium. It’s sort of bizarre. Fun though.
  3. You can never escape Capitalism, even on Medium.
  4. So far, I have only self-published two articles and the rest have been written for publications.
  5. It’s a good dopamine hit when you get published and it isn’t as difficult as you think. Just make sure your grammar and spelling are correct. I see top writers on here that botch that.
  6. The editors do an unbelievable job and they don’t get paid for it.
  7. People love Tom Brady. I have had 28 articles published and have had a total of 3,293 views. My Tom Brady article had 2200 of those views!
  8. I am going to keep writing about Tom Brady. I am not sure of the demographics on these articles but a lot of women have probably read my Tom Brady article due to his handsomeness.
  9. I do not pay a lick of attention to headline pictures that show up on my feed. None. I look at the headline and who wrote it. If I can see who wrote it and what it’s about I know whether or not it has a chance to be good.
  10. This HAS to be fun at some level. What you are doing in life has to be fun or you’ll quit.

In all seriousness, have fun and don’t quit. I know I’m not going to.
