Facts about life

Telling Someone to Live Their Life to the Fullest Is the Worst Advice

But it does not mean they can’t live a good life either.

I will bet one of the reasons that so many people are depressed and defeated is that even though they have heard the advice to live their lives to the fullest everywhere, they cannot achieve that no matter how hard they try.

If you feel this way because of being told that for you to gain happiness, you need to live your life to the fullest since you have not been able to attain that, you are not alone.

So, if you are one of those who say they will start the new year by saying that you will ensure you can live your life to the fullest, as that is your resolution, you may want to rethink that if you want to avoid major disappointment, or even I will dare to say, devastation.

That will be impossible to do. Let’s dissect this further and talk about why telling anyone to live their lives to the fullest is the worst advice ever.

Do You Know What It Truly Means to Live Your Life to the Fullest?

Here is the first question for you. What does “living your life to the fullest” even mean to you?

Does it mean having all the financial freedom in the world so you can travel, enjoy the best experiences money can buy, and be free of responsibilities and commitment, or does it mean living the best life of always being happy?

Here is some food for thought. Suppose you believe that “living your life to the fullest” means being a multi-billionaire so you can enjoy all the things and experiences that only the ultra-wealthy can.

Why are there so many examples of those who were incredibly wealthy and famous who died by suicide, such as Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain?

Or, if your belief about living your life to the fullest is always being happy and content, you will be devastated to find out that it is not always possible, even if you are the glass-half-full type.

There are no guarantees in life other than grief, death, and taxes (in most countries). You will need to find out what the term means to you.

How Realistic Is It to Live Your Life to the Fullest?

When you think about living life to the fullest even more, however you define it, it is too much of a lofty goal that it is unrealistic.

It is okay to have lofty long-term goals, but if you want them to work, you must ensure they are realistic, measurable, timely, and attainable. Prepare yourself to adjust them if your goal is less attainable than you thought.

Now that you know how to set goals is living your life to the fullest a goal to create? That is something for you to ponder.

Inevitable Changes Around You Will Challenge That

Photo by Igor Omilaev on Unsplash

Once upon a time, if you wanted a great life, all you needed was a good education, a promotion, and retirement on a good pension without worrying about income otherwise. However, those days are long gone.

The way the economy has evolved, issues regarding inflation, and other costs that you didn’t have to worry about in the past will challenge that.

You may be fortunate to get into a field you love and make a lot of money with that, but even then, you will face other challenges due to changes.

Even if you are happy with your work and you are making seven figures, unexpected personal situations can challenge that, such as unexpected expenses, having to take time out of your business, and putting things on hold to care for vulnerable loved ones who may not have been vulnerable at one point or issues with the government challenging this.

Even if You Do Achieve Living Your Life to the Fullest, You Will Be Bored

Even if you can achieve that unrealistic goal of “living your life to the fullest,” you will find that it is not all it is cracked up to be.

Think about having all the money and freedom in the world where you can do pretty much anything, buy anything, be free of responsibilities, and everything is perfect. Life is amazing; you do not have to worry about problems again.

Sounds like a dream. However, you will also find that you will stagnate because there is no stress, no new challenges to face, a lack of reason to solve any problems, no reason to look for solutions, and no need for any innovation.

You will become bored, and guess where that happiness from having everything go perfectly so you can “live your life to the fullest” goes?

It goes down the drain. That happiness you once had will become apathy, and you will regret your desire to “live your life to the fullest.”

Instead of worrying about “living your life to the fullest,” you will want to make the best of your situation, look at anything you want to change for the better and figure out how to do that.

Expect any goal you set to take time and experience challenges as you work on attaining them.

Also, never expect life to go as planned, and also expect to have some shitty experiences because that is life.

And the reality is that many shitty experiences that you cannot avoid in life will get in the way of you “living your life to the fullest.”

Also, embrace all your feelings, be authentic, and always hope for the best and plan for the worst.
